Question about pulling engine - 92 SE 5-spd

I need to pull the engine in my 92 SE 5-spd. I have a couple of questions regarding what would be the best method off pulling it.

To drop the engine and tranny together from the bottom, how high do I have to get the car in the air? I dont think my hoist would be able to go high enough to lower the motor when the car is up in the air, so I was thinking about lowering the motor onto the floor and then jacking up the car to slide the motor out from underneath. Would this approach be good?

The easiest way would be to pull the engine and tranny together from above. But is it possible. I didnt think it was but today I saw a pic in the Hayes manual where they pulled the motor from on top. This was in a 88 max. Any chance this would be possible on a 92 or is it too tight?

TIA for any input.

Ok Iv pulled one before. (motor and tranny on a ve) I dropped them from the bottom. I used a jack to lower them to the floor with someone help to stedy it as I lower it. When I pulled the tranny out of my vg (auto) and replaced it with 5speed I took it out from the bottom. You will have to get the car up about 3ft. You will have to get to some bolts from the bottom too so you will have plenty of room to work.

It only has to go up 3 feet and the motor will fit under?

I cant remember exactly but somewhere in there.Or if you have a hoist you can pull it from the top as I did not have one at the time and did not wnat to wait so I pulled it from the bottom.

A few people on here have said in the past that you cant pull it both together from the top... but you most certainly can because I've done it

easiest way is to lower the tranny with the hoist and slide out, and then go back and pull motor out the top, thats how i did mine

i found it very easy to pull mine out the top. the tranny mounts need to come completely off the car as they get in the way, make sure you angle the motor UP first. i also found that its helpful to take the hood off, grille, headlights, radiator. i also had 2 jacks supporting the front of my car when i pulled the motor, so i dropped the car as the motor was being raised out the top. its really not hard. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE OFF YOUR SHIFT LINKAGE! thats the ONE thing i forgot to do and couldnt imagine why the motor wouldnt move anymore

I would refer this question to moderator Jeff. He just replaced my engine, so he had to pull it out. I think that was his third VE 5-speed engine swap, too.
