What type of liquid gasket to use?

What brand and type do you guys recommend to use as a liquid gasket? I need to change my water pump and and thermostat and want to know what to use for it?

The guy at Nissan said to use his but he wanted $20 for it. Any better options?

any of the stuff you can get at the parts store will be fine. they're about $5 a tube for it and it goes a long way. I usually use either blue or black on the water pump stuff and black or orange on oil pan gaskets.

This is for a VE so there is no rubber gasket.

I don't remember one on any of the OEM water pumps I've done on VGs either. hmmmm

Brian, nope.. I keep the blue, black, and orange handy here. I should probably keep some of the grey around too, but that's just one more spot on the workbench taken up with something I use once a year.

VE waterpumps have no gasket. There is a channel that the gasket material rides in. Make sure you take your time and clean the gasket surfaces well. Don't gouge the soft aluminum surfaces. I use the Nissan orange myself.

yeah, i can't stand those dang nozzle things. one way i've found of preventing that is spraying air through the nozzle with the air compressor. makes a cool mess in the trashcan

I haven't used any of the other stuff besides grey. So far so good though, as it's about the only thing keeping my gear oil inside the tranny.

putting old spark plug boots over the ends of the metal tube tips makes them last soooooo much longer (I dont like cutting them open big enough for the end of the cap to fit because alot of the time I have to apply it to smaller surfaces and I own myself )

No they don't. Your Napa (Crappa brand until I fix my axles) brand unit comes with a gasket but it's not really supposed to. Check the Nissan FSM

Plus your version of using gasket sealant is to glob it on like you're trying to stop a FLOOD. Cripes on everything holy batman, there were globs as big as skittles that I took out. hehe

Permatex makes water pump/thermostat-specific paste you could get from Autozone. They're around $3/tube. You'll need 2 for both water pump and thermostat.
