ECU - CONSULT question

Got a quick question. I've found some Aussies that have a CONSULT adapter cable and computer software to emulate the Nissan CONSULT diagnostic tool.

Web sites are:
http://www.plmsdevelopments.com/consult_if.htm
http://home.iprimus.com.au/tkolo/datascan.htm

Among the various US engines they've successfully used this on, the VQ30DE is included, but not the VE30DE. Can anyone tell me if the ECU is the same between these two engines? Do you think this software would work on my 94 VE30DE?

Overall price for the adaptor and software is about $100 US, enough that I want to make reasonably sure this is going to work before I pony up the $$.

This could potentially make life so much easier in diagnosing some common problems that there just don't seem to be a solid answer for - the ever so common hesitation/stalling problem, for instance, that is discussed so often on this board (an active thread at this very minute listing a half dozen or so different possible causes...).

I dont think so.
There are free version of the software available (search for conzult) and schemtics for the circuit are available. I put something together but was never able to get it to work. Another guy (spipedong90) put one together and said he got it working for 5 minutes or so but then could never get it working again. I'm confident that the hardware I built was correct so I dont really think those versions would work for VEs

I consider myself to be pretty internet literate but I've done multiple searches for Conzult and, although I can find various references to the free software, I've not yet figured out where to actually find it...

Definitely keep us updated on the connector. I'm sure the schematics are readily available, but that is beyond my ability to do anything with it except stare at it in wonderment...

I've also found references to a Consult style connector on an SR20 forum, so I'm sure there are definitely people out there that have done this successfully...also there apparently aren't any differences in this connector regardless of whether your Maxima has OBD-II or pre OBD-II diagnostics?

it's the first link google brings up for conzult
http://300zx-twinturbo.com/conzult/
But you can only get the monitoring version there. There is a paid version that allows you to modify settings but I just tried the free one.
I made a cable that goes into the nissan consult port by hacking up a seatbelt harness from an S14 240sx (suggested on one of those forums).

Okay, I'd seen that site before. I guess the SX300 threw me off. Figured that wouldn't work for the Maxima.

Also thought this was just for a 4 banger...

I'll look into this more closely. Thanks! So, do you have a connector or would be interested in modding some up?

check out zcontrol.net

Ill post some pics of what i have so far later.

You can splice in what ever type of connector you want to where the Consult connector comes out.

This is what i finished tonight. I soldered in the serial connector, and wired up the consult end. I will just have to splice it into the consult wiring either tommorow or sunday and then i will let you know what happens.

dangit where did you get all the chips? I was having a hard time finding the right versions and such

I've built an OBD-II reader before and wanted to build the conzult a few months ago but gave up looking for all the right chips

If you guys need chips, let me know. I buy components for a living, and I have some decent sources.

I live 20 mins from a store called You-Do-It Electronics, i got all but 3 of the parts there, and then ordered the remaining from www.Digikey.com .

I'm not sure if I will have time to test it today, I am going to a grad school open house at Northeastern University, but if I have time when I get back, I will give it a whirl, or sometime tommorow.

Hey all,

I went to try to get this working today, got it wired into the harness, but it seems that either the wires in the Z32 consult are different than the maxima consult, or perhaps i need to check my circuitry again...

Well, I went thru the circuit again, found one probable mistake, so I rewired that and then I will have to test it next chance I get.

Here are the schematics that are currently available:
http://www.zcontrol.net/pics/Consult..._Schematic.jpg
http://www.users.bigpond.com/webspac..._Schematic.pdf
http://www.plmsdevelopments.com/imag...t_if_rev3a.pdf

you will notice in comparing these that the 3rd one is the most advanced, incorporating a transmit and recieve LEDs so that you can see when the circuit is working. I borrowed those parts of the circuit and adapted them to the zcontrol circuit for my second test, so hopefully i will at least see if the computer is trying to transmit or receiving any data...

Peace,
Brian

I'm interested to see your results. Mine worked for about 10 minutes when it sat a certain way on the leather I never did figure out what was wrong with it, and I wrecked the car before I could.

Well, I havent tested it yet, but I had an Electrical Engineering friend of mine check out the circuit, and he found a couple things that didnt seem to line up. We hooked it up to a PC power supply and got the circuit to power, simulating the Ignition coming on. SO.... I will let you know what i find asap...

Mine would power up and everything, it just kept sending corrupt data to the software. It actually was accurate and everything for one quick drive, but I couldn't make it work again.

No Shawn, that's what Megan is for.

I do think it was a misprint or design mistake on the schematic. Almost like it would work if a pin was grounded that wasn't normally grounded or something.

I just question whether our wiring is in the same pinouts as the 300ZX, I am going to run thru the wiring diagram of the car to make sure they go the same places, otherwise the data wouldn't flow the same.
