I have a 93 GXE with Auto transmission which has three modes: A/T, Power and Comfort. I really like driving the car in Power mode because there is significantly better acceleration and the ride is much more fun.
My question is: Is this bad for the transmission or engine? Should I usually be in A/T mode and when I want to pass, switch into Sport or O/D?
Someone please help me out.

Thanks,
Roman

switch

being in power wont mess up anything, it just has the engine revv higher before switching (giving better performance) you can leave it in there if you wnat the only problem is you get bad gas mileage.

For some reason I cant tell a difference between power and comfort. When the switch is set on normal and I floor the gas the power switch lights up. The guy at the transmission shop said the switch is supposed to change the suspension settings too. I personally dont see any changes in anything. Can you really tell a diference or is it just in your head?

92GXE, touring wing, 18” racing wheels, Port&Polished intake, custom intake, custom yellow interior, racing seats, back seats taken out and replaced with subs and amps, NOS kit, Suspension tech. Lowering springs, custom grille, soon to be custom painted and have the whole engine rebuilt for big shot NOS and custom SC and tranny converted to 5-speed.

comfort:
when you don't want to rev too high during driving. PROS: less engine noise and higher gas mileage. CONS: less power.

power:
engine will delay the shift..IE wait until engine revs higher before it shifts. PROS: more power CONS: lower MPG, more engine noise. used when racing or driving hard.

in the middle:
the computer will determine the correct RPM to shift by how much u push on the accelerator. if u floor it it will go into power mode. at the same time it will not go to comfort mode if u go slow.

actually...my gas mileage has improved since using power mode and leaving OD off....i drive in a city/suburban atmosphere so speeds are relatively below 50mph most of the time...less gas is need since the car responds quicker...i dunno why but i think Matt93GXE can explain it the best...

I couldn't tell ya why....Just makes sense that higher rpms shoot more gas is used. And on mine if I keep it in power I get much worse gas mileage. Maybe you don't revv that hard in first place? are you easy driver? Also, if you are under 50 mph most of the time then it wont matter much cuz OD won't matter until higher speeds (never noticed exactly what speed it goes into 4th though)

I can easily tell the difference between the modes. I normally drive in the normal position, but will put it in power once in awhile. It seems that in normal, I can pretty much dictate with the accelerator when I want it to shift. The Max auto tranny "listens" to me well.

Well I dont even bother with the switches anymore. When I want to pass or race I just shift it manually. This seems to be the fastest wat to shift then I can controll whther or not it shifts at redline or not. My friends think that because of this it is why I have had my tranny rebuilt 5 differnt times but I cant see whay shifting manually would hurt your tranny. I just think the first one I had in it was weak. The one I have now seems to be doing just fine.

option that came with the car. supposely there's a sensor that reads the rd and adjusts the firmness of the struts. the car also came with summer tires (non all season) and i think ABS.
but that's in 91..

I am begining to think from all of the threads that no one in the U.S. has seen a Nissan Maxima like mine. Well hears a description of my Max. Its a 1991 Nissan Maxima (obviously) "Brougham" Edition. I have the standard SOHC engine. with automatic climate control. Now here's the different part. I also have a full electronic dash with a heads up display which displays my speed on the widshield. Also you know next to your A/T switch you have a coin holder on my Max it has a button that controls the sonar Suspension. Sonar suspension a sonar unit in the front and the back of the nissan maxima the sonar unit takes a reading as to the conditions of the road (bumpy, flat, wet, etc...) and the speed that I am going at and automaticaly adjusts the suspension to suit those conditions (either Firm, Normal, or Soft). Something also different about my car is that being a Canadian car I don't have the automatic seat belt that the U.S. cars have. If you know of anyone else that has a Max like this please let me know who.

Ryan.

Manually downshifting an automatic transmission is bad. I heard that firsthand from the mechanic who rebuilt my white Max's transmission.

What does it mean to manually downshift an automatic?

I have an auto and I know that I can control when it downshifts by depressing the gas pedal at a certain moment. Is that what you guys are talking about?
Why is that bad?

Re: What does it mean to manually downshift an automatic?

It means to take the lever and manually move it to the gear you want it to be in.

So is just downshifting bad? is it a problem to always start in first and shift it manually instead of driving around in D all the time. I wish I didn't have my crappy auto.

Upshifting he said was okay. It's bad when you downshift while the car is in motion. Like downshifting to 1st when going 25 mph. I upshift all of the time.
