I have a 1991 3.0L auto V6 Nissan Maxima. It makes an annoying tapp tapp tapping noise which has gotten progressively worse. Is this the hydrolic lifters?? Does the noise mean that damage is being done to the engine and how can I get rid of it?!! Please someone help!

 

I have the same sound! 93 SOHC GXE. People keep telling me its exhaust manifold studs, Y-Pipe or the water pump. Bought a WSP Y-Pipe and it will be here monday and i am also getting it installed along with the stud that is bad. I will let u know if the sounds gone

Different people say different things about the noise, very annoying! Im very sure its the hydralic lifters, there is more than one going now, it annoys me so bad!!!!!!!!!

 

more than likely its the lifters because i have the same problem with my 94 se.

any idea how to stop it without putting in new lifters? how much do they cost in what countries dollars? is it a long job to do and how hard is it?

 

Same here but mine was the water pump. go figure and not fixing it soo enought i probably lost a head gasket too. only 55 lbs of pressure on cilinder #5 so the shop diagnostics man says really need a diagnostic tool at home

more oil. my vg was making the same noise, i got an oil change and it went away.
PS. i have abad oil leak = low oil = tapping

 

yea i have tried an oil change and a lighter oil and the additive promar, it does help but not forever unfortunately.
