Temperature Problems

I was driving my car home tonight and the temperature is in the 40's here and im taking it easy, keeping the rpms around 2k and i notice on my temperature guage im almost on the line where it starts at the coldest part, so im like what the heck is going on so i punch it and run it through 2nd and 3rd redlining it and it gets back to normal temperature, but soon as i let off it starts to cool down again. Is this a bad thing the drastic cooling off? Is it hurting anything running that cool?
