ABS light on

ABS light on
Recently had new brake pads & new rotors put on front brakes after brakes began making a strange noise only when coming to a gradual stop & only softly applying brake. Noise sounds almost like a spring popping (a ping type sound) & followed by a grinding sound. Did not happen during a "hard" brake, only a "soft" brake. Mechanic said rotors were bad so i replaced them. This did not take care of the noise. Today my ABS light came on. Any suggesions as to what this could be?

welcome, check out the first few posts in this forum (FAQs and stuff). There is a site that descibes the ABS diagnostics to figure out what the light is trying to tell you - wheel sensors are very common thing to go, especially if they were stressed when the brakes were done recently.

not to sound stupid or anything, but what exactly are wheel sensors? I did scan the site you mentioned, but being a non-mechanical type person wasn't sure it was somthing I could check myself?! Or is it?

did you check the article on bignissans.org.uk? in the J30 section, under articles (the direct link is in the FAQs of this site)
the main abs control unit is in the trunk, leave the car on after driving it with the light on and you look at the flashing light on the unit and it'll tell you where the problem is
The is one sensor at each wheel. It is used to tell if that wheel is spinning or not. So if your wheel starts to skid, it'll see that its not turning and help you by pulsing the brakes very quickly (18 times a second I think). The sensors are pretty expensive from a dealer but you can get them fairly cheap at junkyards
