***Help: problem w/ '91 maxima clutch pedal***

i have a '91 maxima 5 spd. it has a problem with the clutch pedal not releasing all the way back to the top. it stays about 1-2" off the floor when released ! it will not shift right because of this ! hard to get into gear also ! i don't know alot about these cars sense i just got it. i was told it is a hydraulic clutch system...meaning no cable ! so is there any adjustment that can be made to fix this problem ? if i'm going down the road and tuck my foot under pedal and pull up the slack it shifts alot better. so i'm pretty sure all my problem lies in the pedal assembly ? i was also told that it could be the slave cylinder or may need to be bleed ?

have any of you guys had similar problems or know what it could be ?

let me know !

thanks !

first try bleeding the sytem if it gets better but then goes back to worse replace clutch slave and repeat if still does it replace master cylinder

also look for clutch fluid where the clutch rod goes throught the firewall on the inside under the dash and make sure its all dry if you feal any fluid your master cylinder is leaking

ok, please explain bleeding process...like where the bleeder valves are and what not .

there is no fluid leakage under dash...was under there today and all is dry !

so the rod goes into slave cylinder ? is that the little mini looking master cyl. looking thing to far left drivers side on firewall right ?

Check the fluid in your master cylinder. There is a good chance that its all gone. if it is, fill it up with DOT 3 brake fluid and either one or both of this...

1)bleed the system
2)pump the clutch at every stoplight you can and after a couple hours the pressure should return back to normal

Your clutch master cylinder is placed right behind the drivers side firewall, right behind the brake master cylinder (Where you check your brake fluid)

thanks matt93se ! i'll check the link !

plenty of fluid in both cylinder's. u mean clutch master is to left of brake master...far left on driver side firewall, right ?

thanks for the info guys !

yeah, the clutch master cyl is the that looks just like your brake Master cyl, only 1/4 the size..

make sure there's no fluid leaking anywhere on them. check the firewall inside the car and make sure it's not running down the firewall as well. common to leak there if the master cylinder is leaking.

the slave cylinder will leak inside the boot on it. pull the boot back and look for fluid.
from the way you're talking, either one of those things isn't sealing and leaking fluid back, or your brake line itself has an aneurism and is about to explode.

let's hope its that anyway.. otherwise there's something wrong with your pedal or the throwout bearing- which requires pulling the tranny to check.

man i'm hoping i can just bleed the system and all will be well !

btw- where are the bleeder vavles located ? i think i saw one on the trans where the hyd. line from slave cyl. goes into trans ? is that right ?
