Is 13.27 MPG normal??
Is 13.27 MPG normal??
Hi, I drive my car in the city, but I noticed that the car is cosuming more gas than before, so I did some calculations:
Tank Full: Trip = 451.5
Half Tank: Trip = 574.3
The gas tank has about 18 1/2 gal so:
(574.3 - 451.5)mi/9.25 gal = 13.27 MPG
I heard that normally this car MPG is about 17 - 18, so I'm asking you what can be the problem with this?? Thanks.

No 13 mpg is not normal, and means something is wrong. But you should calculate your mpg using a different method. Sometimes the fuel gauge is not 100% accurate; meaning that you have more than 9 gallons when the needle is at half.
Fill up the tank all the way, and reset the trip meter. Next time you're at the gas station fill it up all the way, and divide the miles on your trip meter by the number of gallons it took you to fill the tank.
That's the best way to calculate mpg

I also have to wonder at these modded cars out here getting 13-14 mpg. I think I'll keep mine stock, thank you...26-30 mpg highway, 16-20 mpg city, depending on conditions.

Oh, and to all who've responded...I've apparently touched a nerve here with my previous comment about mods affecting fuel economy.
Apparently not all mods will reduce fuel economy. I retract my statement...
Try tune-up. I got about 26 mpg today on the highway driving around 85-90mph constant nonstop. Not bad for a engine with 236k on it. I still have a little over half a tank. This car fails to amaze me.

bad gas mileage:
heavy foot
bad o2 sensor
exhaust manifold leaks
intake manifold leaks
clogged air filter
improperly working injectors (making car run rich perhaps)
maf trouble
those are some i can think of off the top of my head.
