Brake light mean more then parking brake?

Hi, can anyone tell me if the brake light on the dashboard only signals if your parking brake is on or does it also come on because of something else? This morning my light stayed on even though I never use the parking brake I am very confused.

If your brake fluid is low it will also come on. If your brake fluid is low it is because of one of two reasons.

1) Your brakes are very worn.
2) You have a leak some where.

I am having the same problem right now too. I figured that something was up cuz I just replaced me e-brake handle to a leather one, but then I realized that I am leaking a little bit of brake fluid and I found out that it was coming from the master cyclinder (or at least right between the master cylinder and the big brake piston thing). That light means that you are low on brake fluid. Check for leakage/leaks.

My brakes are pretty worn down. Also i noticed when i turn and press down the brake a little I can hear liquid moving around. Kind of like a water container shaking around. Would that have something to do with the problem?

This must be contagious. My brake light came on. I think my rear pads are about shot. They are original (at least they haven't been replaced since 60k) and the car has nearly 150k on it.

first check brake fluid level...if the light goes off...then you know why the light came on in the first place...and it is safe to assume that you probably have a leak somewhere...but if the light doesnt go off...then i could be a number of things

OMG. My brakes like went dead today. I have to push it down to the floor and it doesn't stop well. I just checked the break fluid and it was way below minimum. I filled it up, but the light is still on and it didn't seem to help any.

do we have 2 chambers in our MCs? cuz if thats the case you could just have low fluid going to the rears do you dont even really notice that much, but it would be enough to throw the pressure differancial vlave
