timing issue
timing issue
ok guys, 93 maxiama DOHC , the one with the double roller cam chains, and i put new chains and all that on, now it's not running quite right..is there anyway to adjust the timing with this sysetm?
well we need more info...like why did you have to replace the chain in the first place. If it was because one of them broke then its not going to run right because you have some bent valves (interference engines). If you just replaced the VTCs then maybe they were not rebuilt correctly and its throwing the timing off a little. Or if you put it back just one tooth off it will not run correctly.
First do a compression test then go from there.
Sorry this isnt too helpful but give us a little more info and maybe we can be a little more specific.

well i had to replace the chain's because the bottom crank chain skipped a few teeth and kinda buggered up the chain, so i got all new stuff, tensioners, everything, now...i put it back on according to the specs. i got off the autozone website, everything was "perfect" but now it wont run for **** and there's alot of noise comin from the timing chain cover..is the chain to tight?, and what should i be reading for the compression test? and say it's correct, then what? is there any other adjustment for the timing on the motor, it's the same one you got in ur car awsm66

I hate to say this but if the chain skipped a couple of teeth then you probably have some bent valves.
Looking at the FSM quick reference chart (on the back of the FSM) it looks like the compression should be: Standard-183 PSI and minimum-142 PSI. Now I have never done a compression test on this car so am not 100% sure those are the right numbers I am looking at.
the timing should be 15* +/- 2* and there is a correct procedure in setting the timing but you really need a fsm or some other manual to be able to do it.
At this point knowing what you said about the chain slipping I am would guess its the valves but you will know that for sure if you run a compression check.
Check the stickies there might be a link to how to set the timing (not sure).
Maybe someone that has had a similar problem will see the post and give you more info.
click my name in my sig and email me. I will see if I can find the page for the timing adjustment and email it back to you.
I have a set of heads sitting in my garage if you are interested. All the valves are good
I just took my old engine entirely apart and everything is ready to ship. I have all the engine parts available except the VTCs and the coil packs. I have already sold the injectors, rear manifold and TB.

There is alittle room for error in timing them, not much. It wont run right, but the valves wont get in bed with the pistons. (and the engine will still make good compression).
Did you set the sprockets to line up with the keyed links in the chain? Also was the engine at TDC?
You can hear the overlap in the intake if you listen hard enough, but the engine has to compressing air for it to work (so if the spark plugs are out, it isnt going to happen. The good thing about that, is you can tell if its 1 cam, what side, or if it is both cams.
The tensioners are all hydraulic and auto adjust.
