auto shifter locking up

i bought my max for $500 with rims drop kit exhaust and a blown auto tranny, im kicking myself for not doing a 5-speed swap when i had the chance because i bought a 93 auto tranny with 93k and did it myself... my only problem is that the shifter gets locked up and i have to push down the lock tab to get it out of park most times... this morning i couldn't take it out of drive unless i did that too..
ive heard that i tcould be something loose ontop of the cat.. don't know what it is or what i have to do... anyone wiht advice??

do you hear a click when you press the brake pedal?
there is a shift interlock solenoid by the shifter that may be malfunctioning

my suggestion is to pull the bezel and and check to make sure that voltage gets to the solenoid every time you press the brake pedal.
if it does then chances are the solenoid is the problem.
if it doesn't then check the switch by the brake pedal, it may be worn

you check it while sitting in the car nice and dry, unless your car leaks
