studdering and a weird noise
VG with 140k miles
This started yesterdaay but became worse today. When accelerating moderately, the car seems to studder/shake/surge about 5 times a second or so. It goes away at higher RPM and with more right foot. Also, at a stop and in gear, it makes a rattling/popping noise that seems to come from the front exhaust manifold. I just filled up so I havnt been able to notice increased fuel consupmtion, but does anybody know WTH is wrong with my car this time?

Try pulling out the vacuum line on the back of the intake manifold. Chilton's has a write up on it. Drive it around with the vacuum tube disconnected (just go a couple of blocks). Plug it back in and drive. If the problem went away then it is the fuel pressure regulator (if my memory serves me well). I had this problem for quite a while on a different maxima. Every so often it would do something similar to that and then I'd hop out unplug the line drive stop and plug it back in. good luck.

plz dont pull any vacuum lines if u dont know what your doing,
try being more descriptive.
-what is a high rpm?... 2k 3k 4k 5k 6k 7k...
-what color is the exhaust?
-does it smell of fuel or sulfur?
-when the car starts from a cold start up does it still have this problem?
-does it even happen during highway speeds?
-do the rpm's fluctuate at all during idle
-is this problem effecting your gas mileage?
-is the car running a rich fuel mixture?
-does it seem to dump fuel out of the exaust ?
to properly trobble shoot a poblem u have to ask your self a few basic questions
if u dont already have one then*******BUY A MANUAL********

I'll have to wait untill tomorrow to really look into it. The popping/rattling noise turns into more of a whine past 1500rpm. From a cold start the noise is still there but the studdering/hesitating seemed to be mostly gone. The car wasnt completely warmed up when I got to my destination but it didnt seem to be any worse that when I started the car. Earlier today, when I got on the gas I could still feel it hesitate a bit but it wasnt nearly as pronounced as below 2000 rpm.
And if it means anything, when I popped the hood and bliped the throttle by hand it seemed to go quiet and drop in RPM for maybe half a second before responding.
Like I said, I was nearly empty on gas before this really started, but I'll try to calculate my MPG this weekend. I'll have to check the exhuast smell/look tomorrow.
