What has more problems......a 10-15 year old car or a 1-4 year old car?

I would seriously say a 5th gen. Many of those Auto trannys go out before 70k. USUALLY in our 3rd gens the Auto tranny last over 100k.
Also, parts/repair are much cheaper for a 3rd gen (obviously)

1 im the guy that nags him because he spent to much money.

2 he could of had the same or better performance from a ve30de 5sp in place of his 5th gen vq gle auto. on top of that he's replacing the trany with his warranty as we speak

Granted the 5th gen is a nice flag ship boat with plenty of tq, it does handle like a 3rd gen, well i feel there’s a whole world of turns why should i limit my self

Also i noticed he has no money because he took out a loan for his car. Which really sucks car payments, plus insurances in nj rapes monkeys up there crack

My feeling is the best bang for your buck i would have to say is a 3rd gen if I had to do it again I would follow the same foot steps

it depends. some 5th gens are in far worse condition that some 3rd gens. Its all in taking care of your car.

I know a 5th gen owner that's had issues with his car. He's owned an example of every Maxima I think since the 2gs, and he says each one has gotten successively worse in reliability. His 5th gen 6spd went out, so did its nav system, and I think he even had an intermittent car-won't-start problem related to the nav system.

It depends though. a factory suspension repair on a 5G is reportedly MUCH cheaper than a 3G, and AFAIK you don't have to worry about injectors on 5Gs. 3Gs have the "advantage" of being less technologically complex.

Hmm on my 5th gen within the 3 years of ownership:

Transmission:
Replaced TCM
Replaced Faulty 2-3 shift solenoid

Engine:
Coil Pack
very noisy injectors, constant tick tick tick tick tick tick
noisy rear motor mount resetting itself after shutting engine
engine would take 5-10seconds to turn over if you turn the key before without starting the car.

Misc:
A-piller rattle
Center stack rattle
door rattle
glove box rattle
pass SRS airbag wire rattle
bose rear woofer rattle
power moonroof stopped but fixed itself
power driver seat rear up/down worked sometimes
passenger side leather had blemish
bose CD stopped working when having heater or A/C blowing for extended periods
outside temp goes wonkie in sub zero degree weather, who knew the temp could fluxuate between -21 to -5 in a seconds time?
rear window wind noise
rear door panels squeak
warped rotors@14,XXX
warped rotors@39,XXX
warped rotors@77,XXX
warped rotors@85,XXX

It was a nice car though, especially since all of the rattles I tackled myself because the dealer decided to play stupid after the 3rd time I went in for another rattle. The main issue that bothered the crap out of my is the weak rotors. I should have known better after the 3rd time to switch to better aftermarket rotors. It drove nicely, it had a sense of solidity over bumps (ea steering column was solid with no jiggles or wiggles, suspension was firmly damped, steering has weight) The H4 headlights were out of this world, excellent performance anywhere for a Halogen.

I would like to get a 5G, but I get wary of them the more people describe their experience. I'm not a rough driver, so maybe I'd be fine with a nice 1-owner car...

Is the 5G far better in performance than a 3G or 4G? Or is it only marginally better. To me it seems like it would be a far better performer than a 3G (what I have now), but I don't know...

should you sell you1-4 year old car for a car ten years older? No. trust me your 5th gen will be around alot longer than a 3rd gen you buy unless you dump some cash into it. All cars have problems, if you didnt already have a 5th gen than I would say consider the 3rd gen but dont sell it for a 14 year old car.

Well I use auto.consumerguide.com as a basic meter of how much a used car would/will cost should I buy it. I like their general rundown of year-to-year changes, TSBs and recalls, and price listings for repairs.

According to them the Maxima has, since 3G, gotten cheaper to fix, especially in the suspension department. They don't have any stats for the 6G though.

3rd-gen Maximas are seriously bulletproof as long as you know the few troublespots, and take care of them. Even the ****ty auto-trans will still outlast a wide array of other vehicles.

Huh? My 3rd gen has an auto with almost 160k on it, going strong...
