weird electrical issues - gremlins? Help pls

I have a 1993 gxe with 50K mi. Yesterday, it was having trouble starting and running, so I took it into the shop - they gave it a new distributer cap, plugs and it ran fine. We had torrential rain yesterday, then last night I went to take it out and the whole electrical system began blinking in and out. If I held the shifter to the right, it stayed on, but the breaks were weird - seemed to go right into ABS mode even though the roads were clear. I took it back to the shop - they disassebled the shift lever including detaching all electrical from it. Apparently, the entire system is grounding up the shift cable and across the mechanism.

The items that blink in and out are - all lights, auto seatbelts, gauges, radio, locks, horn, etc...

Please help. My mechanic is great, but I think he's stumped.
He already checked the ground points, but I'm not sure if he was able to get a complete listing of where they all were.
THanks!
