Hard to tell, I keep getting the sound in chops, after about 3 seconds. Easiest way, pull off the alternator and turn it by hand. If you still hear the grinding noise that's your culprit. If it turns smoothly, could be your A/C, water pump, power steering. You'll just have to take off the belts and try them 1 by 1 till you find it.

Well I had it all done today, New Belts and Alternator. The noise is still there. The only thing left that I can this of is the Timming Belt and Tensioner Any other ideas any one?

Thanks

Have you tried the old trick of sticking a long metal rod(screwdriver, prybar, etc) on the individual components and putting your ear to it? It works great for those types of noises. Like a doctor's stethoscope. Disclaimer: If the part is moving, don't touch it. Use a stationary bracket nearby. Anyway. This is all I've got for you right now. Too many possibilities. Make a checklist and verify each turning component one by one. You'll narrow down the search some. Have fun.

I dont really want to mess with this damm sound anymore I will just have to deal with it. No one can fix it, Its been in multiple shops(Dealer TOO) things were replaced when they werent needed. If the sound has been with the car for 4 yrs I dont think its anything to worry about right? So I am just gonna ignore it plus I always have me stereo on so it doesnt matter anyways. Other then that its great car low miles and all maintained. 111 miles new tires Kyb Struts, Rims, Exhaust, WPS Y pipe, Cold air intake, NGK plugs and wires, Oil changed every 2500 miles, 5w 30. Everything is mint inside and out except this damm sound LOL well wat can I say deal with it right LOL. And best of all I got the car for FREE!!!! LOL

THANKS For Your Help Guys!

i cant believe you actually ran out and replaced it on a hunch i had on the internet. i said it sounded like that. however hearing it in person could be totally different. i tried my best but a mechanic would have to determine the sound. if the mechanics by you cant stop the sound thn they are pretty poor mechanics. ill take another listen but please dont go replacing it until its checked in person. i feel bad that wasnt it and you paid for a new alternator but geez find a good mechanic

Had something like that with my '89 a while back. I did the belt elimination process like kcilmid did and found it to be a bad bearing in the tensioner pulley. The stethoscope (Automotive type) helps too.Good luck

Might not be the problem in your case. Mine made the noise hot or cold. 4 years seems a long time for it not to go completely bad if it was the tension pulley bearing . Still might check it. These kinds of things make you want to ride a horse.

Easiest way man, just take of all the belts, and try and rotate each pulley. Eventually you'll find the problem. I crummy way to do it, but it works.
