broken speedometer

I was driving down the highway today and my speedometer just stopped working. I suspect that the cable ends are bad somewhere. But I can't find where the cable is. I looked in my Haynes manual and still can't find it. Anyone replaced this before? Anything else it could be? Every other guage in the dash works except the speedometer and the odometer. Thank you in advance!

indeed...no cable.
it's a common problem for the speed sensor to fail or for the speedometer unit behind your gauges to screw up. i repalced my speed sensor after having the same issue and it didn't fix things. i then replaced the speedometer itself and now i haven't had any problems.

How do you replace the speedometer speed sensor. I need to replace mine. It goes up to 15mph and then stays at 45mph all the time. What do you do after you unscrew that one 10mm bolt that holds the speed sensor onto the transmission? Do you just pull it up of twist it out?

Yeah but it can be easier said than done. Twist, and pull up, watch out for gear oil.

for anyone else reading this 5 year old thread lol it could be a solenoid on the back of the cluster as well, its replaceable and IIRC Radio Shack or places like them will have what you need and you just solder it in

i need to fix mine, RPM cuts in 1/10th of the time now and temperature cuts in half of the time. for me it would be cheapest to just get a junkyard cluster for $12 but i would want a SE one and none ive come by have a ABS light on them and i need one with ABS

i would tend to think that if you had an issue with the speed sensor that it would read 0mph rather than giving false readings. I would lean more toward the problem being the gauge itself rather than the speed sensor. you can verify this by trying to use cruise control (if cruise control previously worked) and also if the odometer works properly then so does the speed sensor.

then get a JY gauge cluster and just swap the gauges themselves into your current cluster shell, so your ABS light still works

someone had pics up of them doing the solenoid, their RPM needle was bouncing randomly like mine did before it basically died and a solenoid had problems, replaced it and it works

i might run to the junkyard today then and get that SE cluster if i can just swap the gauges themselves

i'd like to see just what solenoid you're talking about... you sure you didn't mean capacitor? this is a capacitor
