the key, here:

You should see at least 50 posts on the subject.

In summation:

Mobile 1 5W-30 Synthetic
Non-Fram filter
10K change intervals

As for gas, Amoco Ultimate is good stuff.

I've been using Castrol GTX. They say that synthetic oils can be harmful if the engine isn't brand new, but I've heard all kinds of conflicting stories. I either use 92 octane gas or 89 with a can of booster. Texaco is good. I stay away from Exxon, personally. People will give you all kinds of brands that they say they stay away from, though. I've never heard any consistant stories about specific brands. Someone says it's junk and the next guy swears by it. Go figure...

I run Mobil-1 5W-30 (0W-30 in winter), K&N or Nissan filter.

I have my oil tested and based on the tests would not go much beyone 3K intervals.

You may be able to stretch the interval, but then IMHO why take the risk? To save a very few bucks compared to the risk.

I have my oil tested at www.blackstone-labs.com

Tick Tock,

Is there any chance that you could send me the results of your test, i.e. the specific numbers as well as comments made by Blackstone. I have a spread sheet that details my findings and would like yours as a cross reference.

BTW, it is not a risk to stretch an interval if the oil is still doing its job.

Are you using synthetic or dino Mobile 1?

I use plain old Castrol 5W-30 and a Napa Gold filter. And I change my oil no later than every 3000 miles. I also exclusively use Chevron 92 octane gas with STP fuel injector cleaner about every 3000 miles.

Bill (99GXE) - I'll send you my results (not with me currently). Can I fax them to you or scan and e-mail rather than type them all in or??

I agree on extending the interval - ok if the oil's fine. However, oil life (condition) is conditional on environment, use, etc. The oil life may not be consistent from change to change unless all conditions remain equal.

Also, Mobil-1 is synthetic. The dino Mobil is not designated Mobil-1 only Mobil.

Have you ever had your ATF tested? I have been pondering that for my next flush.

One more...

For all: another very useful reference below

For Bill - your link to the spreadsheet is not accessible. Not sure if the link is invalid or your servers down??

TickTock. I would like to see the test results also. Hey, I commend you for spending the money to get it tested vs these other bozos just spouting their unfounded opinions.

Did the test indicate any possible mechanical problems that would cause the oil to degrade? thanks.

You should be able to get a copy of it below in my sig. You can just fill it in the blank columns and I'll make it all pretty.

About the ATF:

Yes. I am in the process of doing this. Summation:

Nissan ATF lasts NO MORE than 30k. My 99 was tested with 32k on it and it needs replacement.

As for my 94, I'm experimenting. I had my ATF examined after 30k (when I had a flush done by a machine) and it needed replacing as well. I then did 3 drain 'n fills, refilling with Amsoil synthetic instead of plain dino ATF. On the 4th drain n' fill, I took another sample and should have ALL those results on the spreadsheet by next week.

BILL, HERE ARE THE OIL NUMBERS

First numbers are my sample results - second are the universal averages that are on my report (I included them since they differ a bit from those in your spreadsheet).
___________________________
Miles/Sample Date
72,000 miles
Oil Use Interval (mile) 3000

Oil Brand/Grade Mobil 1 Universal Avgs
0W-30
----- --------------
Aluminum 6 6
Chromiun 2 6
Iron 19 24
Copper 3 9
Lead 2 16
Tin 2 1
Molybdenum 0 118
Nickel 1 0
Manganese 0 0
Silver 0 0
Titanium 0 0
Vanadium 0 0
Boron 50 29
Silicon 8 21
Sodium 7 15
Calcium 784 1348
Magnesium 1303 580
Phosphorus 627 812
Zinc 718 912
Barium 0 0

SUS VISC @210F 55.7
FLASHPOINT 365
FUEL % <0.5%
ANTIFREEZE 0%
WATER 0%
INSOLUBLES 0.6%

REPORT:
No problems showed up in this initial sample of used oil from you Maxima. All wear was at or below averages for this type of engine, which is a good indication of normal wearing parts. The viscosity was normal for this type of oil. No fuel dilution or coolant contamination was present. Insolubles (oil oxidation due to heat and use) were at the limits at 0.6% so we don't suggest running this oil much longer than 3,000 miles, unless the filter is changes.

i got my max at 155k kms, and thats when it seen synthetic for the first time, ( i assume this, cause it use to make alot of vtc noise, but since ive began using MOBIL 1 5W30, the noise has gone)
So, Mobil one for the motor with oem filter, and AMS oil in the tranny.
Shes got 197k kms on her now, all synthetic and no weird noises are coming forth.
Compression is still mint, and the oil is the same colour when i change it (evry 5k km) as when it was put in.
Im gonna go race her for the first time this yearon sunday.
