Who owns 3 maximas...I do

Hi:

Posted just for fun.
Does anyone else out there own 3 maximas or maybe it's maximi in the plural. Just curious. I have a 91, 92 and a 2001......I've probably lived through all the problems that ever appeared on these threads over the years.

I have at one time owned 4 3rd gen maximas at once. All together I have owned 6.

1-89SE (parts car)
2-90GXE (sold)
3-92GXE (sold)
4-92SE (my new toy)
5-93SE (need to finish and sell)
6-94GXE (parts car)

I owned the 90GXE, 92GXE, 93SE and the 89SE parts car all at one time. Now I am down to the 92SE, 93SE, 89SE (parts car) and 94GXE (parts car).

Does having owned a 2G SE5, owning a 3G SE5, and thinking about a 5G SE5 count?

I have a 94 GXE and a 97 GXE, both low miles for their age. Started way back with a 1972 Datsun 510.

Cars with round headlights and rear wheel drive are the easiest to maintain.

all autos are that bad

the tranny cooler in them isn't the greatest so it actually heats them up more than it does cool them off. if you get a better tranny cooler it'll last much longer. this car had 130k on it and the tranny wasn't working correctly.... however... the people that owned it before me beat the living **** out of it. how they could mess up one of these engines is beyond me.

VH45 definitely not going into a maxima anytime soon... not even if converted to rwd i bet. these things are huge. 90 degree, DOHC, 4.5 liter, V8... its a monster. not all that heavy though due to being all aluminum.

Well before you put the VH45 in, I'd tell you to convert the Max chassis to RWD first and throw in some stiffening crossmembers. I wouldn't have ya go through all that trouble only to make it FWD.

The auto tranny is always the thing I notice most when I look on AutoTrader.com for used Infinitis...there's always plenty of ads talking about a bad tranny or something like that. That's too bad. How hard is it to put on a good tranny cooler?

Yes, I have three. Two 92's and a 93. All three SE's with the VE. I love these cars.

shouldn't be too hard at all. take a look at www.nicoclub.com and go to the infiniti section. there is tons of information about Q45's there. also, if you're looking to get a 90-93 Q45 beware of the timing chain guides. some of them were made of plastic and eventually break causing the timing chain to go slack. with the engine being an interference design massive damage can occur if the chain skips some teeth on the sprocket. the repair takes some time and is expensive if you have someone do it but if you like or are able to do work on cars... the 90-93 is best performance wise. the timing chain guide design flaw has been fixed so that all of the guides are metal backed now.

90-93 had the best head design which actually gave the engine two power peaks (which feels quite badass i might add). 94-96 had a head change and didn't quite have the same power and performance of the earlier ones but was a bit more oriented for luxury with a "classier" looking interior, a bit softer suspension, and a grill to work on styling (90-93 didn't have a grill because it adversly affected aerodynamics... that's how performance oriented it was). the 94-96 also didn't have the timing chain guide issue.

i believe in 93 or 94 the transmission control unit was reprogrammed to start off in 1st gear compared to 2nd gear in the 90-92 or 90-93. if you get a 1st gen you can put in the TCU from a 94+ for the first gear start which really unleashes some fury in these engines.

but yeah, for more info on Q's check out www.nicoclub.com and www.q45.org

lastly i might add that you want to be careful driving these things. i think infiniti said the cars would do 155 mph and no one doubts that whatsoever. you'll find yourself cruising along and look down at the speedo to find yourself doing 100+ mph pretty easily. i have to say the 90 that i picked up was one badass car and i am most definitely going to get another down the road that i won't be tearing apart.

sorry for going ot guys

That's cool. I'd like to pick up an old 1G-A Q45, but the HICAS and all that other jazz kinda makes them cost-prohibitive (when thinking about repairs) on my current budget. And plastic chain guides? Who do I have to fire over that one?

I'd sure like to try one though; they look pretty good, and ya, the magazines loved that first model. The Q has never been the same since 93. =\ Hopefully one day Infiniti will have something that can actually soak some LS430 sales.

This is why I love this board. True dedication to a truly great car.

I have throughout the last 2.5 years owned 4 3rd gens, maximum 2 at a time. Three driving and one parts car, only one VE.

3rd gen owners, percentage wise, definitely seem to be the most loyal and happiest with their cars on these boards... strange considering they are now officially at least one decade old. woa

yeah... the plastic timing chain guides pissed me off. man... toyota did it too in the 22RE but what's really stupid is they don't make metal backed ones.... they claim they'll last about 100,000 miles though... which is probably right... but the fact still remains... plastic!

i'm thinking the M45 should do really well. being very sporty and all that i think it do what the 1G Q did. you think infiniti would have got a clue by seeing that the sales numbers of the 1G are higher than another other Q ever...

on topic: i'm planning on picking up some more 3rd gen maximas down the road. i still have to do a rwd max, awd max, and a vg30dett max. (no... i'm seriously not joking)

Let me know when you finish the RWD Max. I might just buy it from ya.

All the current and upcoming Infinitis are nice, but what's going on with the Q? Where's the concept for that car? It's about time for a new one.

Well considering our disposition we'd drive M5's if we had money. We're not necessarily all-gens-fans, we just love the 3rd gen's overall quality (I assume this is the majority).

I appreciate 3Gs for what they represent given their time: Japan's then-best built, best driving, most powerful, most fun family-ish sedan. Plus, it is still on of the best looking Japanese sedans around. The exterior has Audi-ish qualities; a nice, clean, well-kept example gets looks.

But Toyota made the design look worse when they practically copied it for their 3G Camry.
