Noise or more specifically the harmonics at which it operates
actually emissions too based on the way it scavenges the cylinder which also affects power.
now it may not neccessarily affect all of the above on the maxima, I'm not an automotive engineer, but play around with it on other cars and you'll see a difference.

Noise suppession by running the exhaust into each other. That's about it. Just like baffled mufflers that split the exhaust and run it back each other. I don't know about harmonics. I suppose you could tune the resonance this way but it's a terrible way to do it. Look how thick the metal is and how many shields it has. Has to be noise only. I also question how running exhaust backwards into forward running exhaust could help scavenge anything. IMHO

maybe they're trying to do the opposite of scavenging.
they may may have been trying to leave some exhaust in there in order to dilute the incoming charge
we'll never know for sure unless we find the guy who designed it. of course he'll probably say that he just liked the look of it

EGR only comes into play under certain load conditions, the Y-pipe would affect all conditions.

I personally wouldn't want any exhaust return like that in any conditions. EGR is an emission type device. So I'd only want it during part throttle etc.. and not all the time when it would hurt performance.

Good laugh! I 'm also ashamed to show that to anybody, better keep lid zipped on...

The gases seem to meet at 90 degree angle, not head on, not too bad. And when one blast has left this intersection, new blast comes from top. As it has 'left', one comes from left.

=zipper. =no collision. =effective based on rice calculus?

I hate stock ypipe, and if somebody donates me better, will change. Please... Just figuring out what was the benefit of this 1985? arrangement, absolutely there had to be one, real $ (to stock owners, NOT car owner)

You can have a new Y section custom made. Alot cheaper than importing 1 from the USA to Europe. Any decent exhaust shop can do this. My brother had a custom one done also. Look here:
This one is custom made.
http://www.4dsc.com/articles/drivetr...r_y-pipe.shtml
and here:
http://www.4dsc.com/articles/drivetr...n_y-pipe.shtml
Here you can see a pic. The exhaust flows forward a bit.

You can show the exhaust shop these pics and they should be able to redo the rear bank to flow rearward vs forward.

Thanks for the pics.

Have made some pipes to keep on the road, no racing, can do myself. Will I? dunno... But if, then I am interested in the exact lenghts to joining 'point', front vs rear pipe - and how this affects performance curves with opened intake.

The zipper...

The articles/pics do not calculate, just cut and paste and assume high y-angle is better that low y-angle... I suppose no comparisons anywhwre, if somewhere, they are kept trade secrets.
