You shouldn't need to drop the oil pan in order to replace the "rear main oil seal". Do you don't need an oil pan gasket. Just order a rear main oil seal from the dealership. Don't skimp on this part. Get the best quality you can get (OEM Nissan), since it involves so much labor (dropping the tranny).

Also, go ahead and get new axle seals since you will be removing the axles in the process. And get a service manual. Atleast get a Haynes or Chiltons. But I HIGHLY recommend that you forget about those and get a "Factory Service Manual" for your car. If you have an automatic, then you can get any Factory Service Manual (FSM) from 89-94 and it will work for your car.

stupid question: I am guessing you have to drain the oil before you change seals correct?

actually no (as long as you dont do it while the engine is running )

most of the oil will be down in the pan when it's off

replace the rubber lip seal on the oil pan while you're in there. there is also a paper gasket that goes behing the rear main seal retainer. replace both of those with OEM parts, as well as the rear main and both axle seals while you're doing this job. you don't want to do it again, trust me.

For clarification, you do need to drain your tranny fluid, but don't drain your motor oil.

Ok, came back from the dealer during lunch. Kinda crazy what happened. Had to wait like 15 min before I got helped, but here is what I walked out with:
-rear main seal
-main seal retainer gasket
-axles seals

I did not get the oil pan rubber lip seals. There was 2 of them and they were $17 each. I could always do this by just dropping out the oil pan right?

SO anyways, some old guy is in there and the parts guy is giving him a price for one corner light for his '90 SE with 75k on it. $82 for one light. I told him to check out a junk yard and install it himself with a phillips and flathead screwdriver. So we talk and I am meeting him at the dealer tomorrow to sell him my old corner light and install it for him for $30. Not bad eh?

Then some other lady is getting a price for floormats for her '04 Max and tells us hows she loves it. Shes had a 90 and 91 max and went to a Benz, got rid of that and is thankful for the Max she has now. She said it does not compare to the '91 benz she had or the BMWs she has driven. Kinda makes you think how good these cars are.

I HIGHLY recommend that you change the seal on the rear part of the oil pan!! Go back to the dealer and pay whatever they want to charge you. B/c most likely, that is the seal that is leaking. But yes, you can get to the pan seals by dropping the pan. But I highly recommend that you change this rear seal while you have the transmission out!

I stumbled upon this picture. Even though this is a VE. I am assuming this is the rear main seal:

Yeap, that's a rear main oil seal.

Here's another one taken from my car:
