Question: Clatter sound at 1,000rpm in park
I just bought a 93 maxima with 54K miles, Great condition. I have question, I read that there was a problem with DOHC motors and some clatter coming from the front/top of the motor ( something about the VTC and grounding them out). My motor is a SOHC, but I am hearing the same type of sound. The original owner said his mechanic told him the noise went away after he removed the alt. belt. But returns with the belt on.. But to me it doesnt sound like a altern. bearing or belt, it sounds like a clatter ( maybe lifters not pumped up) the sound goes away when you rev past 2,800rpm. I saw all the reciepts and the oil was changed methodically.
Other that this clatter the motor runs great, Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause this? Is this common?

First thing I would do is confirm it by removing the altenator belt. If it does infact go away, inspect the altenator and then determine if you need to buy a new one. Hopefully it will be the alty, as it is much cheaper and easier than engine work .

Along with what DanNY and Shawn said my first thought when someone mentions a rattling noise on a SHOC motor is the exhaust studs. Although an exhaust leak really doesnt sound like valves clattering so who knows. Its really hard to diagnose a sound over the internet.
Look for broken exhaust studs (should be 2 per exhaust port) and go from there.
