need help with the water pump
anyone know if you can take the water pump off without taking the crank pulley off im a little stuck and cant seem to wedge it out anywhere without taking off the crank pulley. I would just take it off but i dont have a 27mm bit for my impact gun and i wont have a car until atleast 6. help...

1st gear is the wrong way. you put 60ft-lb on the crank pulley to turn the engine, and it's going to put 600ft-lb on the output of the tranny to turn the front wheels.
if you put it in 5th gear, it's closer to 1:1 and you shouldn't turn the wheels.

i just put it in 5th and zipped her right off but now i dont have a car anymore and the idiots at auotzone told me i needed the harmonic balancer puller and i told them i need a 3 prong puller but i went with the harmonic puller and it dosnt work so now i am stuck with trying to get the crank pully off with no puller f-in A.......

The stock pulley "should" just slide off. Unless it has some rust on the crank. But usually it can be "coaxed" off by lightly tapping it with a hammer. As some as you can see it budge, you can usually grab each end and pull it off by hand

yeah it had a bunch of skinny bolts that didnt work otherwise it would have worked and it is the stock pulley i put some pb blaster on it and im washing my other three rims to get set to paint if anything ill just run back to the store and pick up the puller

Also I used a 1-1/8" socket IIRC (if not, it was a 1") I believe 27mm is too large.
I also used a prybar on the pulley, just enough to get it moving then it just slid right off.

Does having a 5spd. make it more difficult to pull out a water pump? The reason I ask is because I did mine without removing anything except the belts abd the bolts to the water pump.

You can remove it without doing the tranny thing, but it is alot easier to do the tranny.
When I did mine I didnt even have a transmission on the car, so I had an easy time

i dont think it is possible to get the pump out without removing the crank pulley or tilting it like matt said but i think the pulley is easier once i get that puller
Mr. gone 27mm is the right socket
5ltr beater do you have abs if so how did you get it out

I've pulled it out both from top and bottom before without lowering the engine, but it scratches up the frame rail a bit from all the twisting and flipping.. Trust me, it's easier to just remove one or two of the tranny mount bolts and just give yourself the extra room. it saves a half hour of twisting and cursing.
especially when you have the sealing edge on the pulley covered in RTV and you're trying to weasel the thing back down into position. not having to spend 15 minutes pushing, twisting, and flipping will be much appreciated later.

That's a negative for the ABS. I really wish i had it. And as far as me getting the water pump out, I just wiggled it out from the bottom. I must say it put up a hell of a fight. But in the end I won. I thought getting the new one in would be just as hard as getting it out. But i managed to get it in quite easy. Did i mention that i did it while the car was on a rack 5ft in the air. I have access to a rack so that might have made the job a little easier.

I wish i had thought about the tranny mount trick. I tilted the motor using a jack and 2x4 under the oil pan. I also have ABS and the difficult part was getting the tensioner off. The downside to doing it this way is that I eventually got frustrated with the RTV getting all over and finally did a haphazard job of getting it all on neatly. Needless to say, after a couple of days, I was dripping coolant again. I finally re-sealed it last weekend when I moved the water pipe.

ok got it in really sucked though even with the crank pulley off and the timing pointer out it still took me an hour to wiggle it out and then about 5min to put it in go figure and i got the sealer gasket stuff every where but the pump came with a gasket so hopefully it will be ok. haha you should have seen the old pump i could wiggle the pump shaft loose and the thing spun like a top. well thanks for your helps guys hopefully i wont have to do that again next project is those damn vtcs.

I was able to get mine off with the crank pulley on. I just jacked the engine from the oil pan with two blocks of wood, tilted it as much as it would go. Then moved the water pump all around in different angles until I got it out of one, then slid the new one in that same way and bolted it up.
