Dead speedometer
Dead speedometer
My speedometer quit on me this week, it had been acting eratic for a while, it would show speeds higher than I was going, sometimes bounce around when I was stopped. This week it stopped all together. I'll be checking the sensor but I suspect it's the cluster. has anyone had experience with this? Any ideas?

No experience on this particular gauge, but maxima electronic analog gauges have a coil fed by the sender unit. The current generated by sender, creates a magnetic forecefield on the pointer magnet, trying to turn it. There is also a spring that pulls back toward zero.
Any energy for the jump of the needle pointer has to come somewhere, will not be affected by birds... The only energy source here is the sender's rotating magnet 'generator'. There'es smtg wrong -or- somewhere is a intermittent short to +12V.
I have the same problem with my speedometer. sometims if I drive the car after its been parked for about 2 days it will jump all over the place then just go way past the 125 mark. sometimes it will jump all over the place and then when I stop it will go back to 0. sometimes it will work fine till I have been driving it for about 10 minutes then it will go past 125 and my cruse wont work then after about 10 minutes or so it will work again and I wont have any problems out of it.
close to the oil filter there is a speed sensor, its actualy located on the trany and it goes bad alot. Just replace it, very easy to do because it only has one 10mm bolt holding it in place. autozone has it for like 60-70 bucks.
Having the same prob. but mine seems to come and go with the weather. when the humidity is high or things are moist(mornings) live in southern miss. the speedo goes out. when things get cold or warm up it works for a couple days. I changed my speed sensor and still have the same prob. good luck
I just fixed the speedometer on an 89 Maxima. The culprit was the male plug that connects the speed sensor to the wiring harness. I bent the two wire prongs to the side a little so it made a better connection. Hope your fix is as easy.
9 times out of 10 its the speedometer or the or other gauge that is messing up and not the sensor. It can be the sensor also but try the cluster first. Try resoldering components the parts messing up or just replace the whole cluster.
I have had 4 speedometers mess up combined in all my maximas but have never had a sensor go out. Others have had the sensor go out though so I am not saying it cant be the sensor.
