DIY wheel alignment (Toe In)

After somebodys ? request, I decided today to document the two DIY alignment styles I use to save €€.€€... One better than the other.

Another way is to invest to a 40-100$ alignment tool [google it] and save the rest of u life on this nuance...

Please give comments/corrections.

I dont know how well I trust the DIY allignment, I would rather pay the $120 for the lifetime allignment at Bridgestone, then I know it is dead nuts.

http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/smart1.htm

check that out, looks like something I can make my self.

Edit: ive been searching google and every alignment tool out there is different, but they all align the tires toe. (wich opens/closes the tire, ei. makes Front of the tire face inward or outward, dont know if thats clear)

does the angle the tire is in effect the wear of the tire. say the tire thread wear out from only one side (inerside) example: / \ front tires look like that.

they would both still be aligned at the bottom but tire wear will still be uneven right?? how would you compensate for that? The link provided was very helpfull, I now know what to adjust for the aligment.

I've seen on nice tool in the net one tool for all three adj for fron tires; around 100$

Yes, with that tool u mention you get adjusted all four; not camber and caster. The rear ones are easily aligned on snow or loose dirt: just check tire marks.

As u adjust the alignment from one end of the rod, think of the whole long rod system from one side to another. It always aligns 'both', and IF toe in is in specs, no wear on either tire. Both wheels always position themselves in the same angle --- The steering wheel looses its position if only adjusted from one side...

dmontza: there is no such thing as lifetime adj. Next hit on pavement corner and thats it... need new check; maybe adj. Price, tools has 'nothing to do' with being aligned: IF alignment is well done, its well done even if done with a crooked magic stick...

The basic alignment is so laughable simplex that humankind has survived 100 years without lasers... see the 'sailboat rope -system' link lalo gave... then I am not saying there is anything wrong getting done with high tech gear and paying for it. (BUT. If that is done shoddily at stealership, well done -no money- system is better...)
