my Vg still seems to amaze me

Ok well I got this car and motor with 98,000 on it. Well I have been hard as hell on it since I got it. Red line it at Least 6 to 15 times daily. Then I took out the auto tranny at 160,000 and swap in the five speed. At 163,000 I went with boost. I did not do any fuel mods at all. Well Ive been boosting like 7 psi. Ok lot of trips to the track and lot of ripping and having fun with it.Well since then I have installed a safc and have got my injectors. Well last week end I was on the I-26 ANd the oil light comes on and im in the middle of heavy trafic So I cut it off and roll a little and then Im forced to recrank it to get off the side of the road. Well when I get out I see the side of my car is covered in oil and the front tire is (UNDER TURBO) So I looked but I could not see where oil was coming from .I check the feed like and it was fine the drain seem to be fine also. But right before I got out of the car is was tapping realy bad. So I get to a gas station and get some oil. I was 3 and a half quarts low. When I recranked it it knocked for about A minute. So I was like **** great now its gone. Well after this I give it some rev to see where it was coming from it was the drain line that got whole in it. Well that monday I went to the junk yard and got me a vg with 130,000 on it for $150 and I just put it in my shop for when this one goes. But I dont think it will be no time soon. It just nock on cold starts and then goes away. It still seems to be very strong. No power lose still running good at the track. I Have a 177,000 now. Well its been drove hard since day one. let see boosted and drove with no oil in it.WOW I would not doubt if it goes for 200,000

what makes the VG last longer than the VE? is it because of that vtc tick that all the VE guys talk about?

My VG has lifter issues and ticks like a VE

93turbo gxe-Your turbo setup is pretty interesting, did you do a reverse-y setup or what? I can't really tell from the pics. Your max looks good though, I'm interested as well as to what you are running at the track with it.

VG is a simpler design, and that helps contribute to its longevity (no VTCs or electrical gremlins associated w/ a coil-on-plug setup). Both engines will last a loonngggg time if properly maintained. I think Donald's VE went for 300k before he finally decided to put a fresh motor in.

Hi,

the vg will last long then you think,

it will last longer then your ve,

my family has another car that has the vg engine,

it has 271k miles counting and still running and still going,

so don't think the vg won't last long,

Haha...I'd still rather have a VE max than a VG too, unless it was a turbo VG of course

Yeah, I was talking about the Z w/ the lifter issues, gonna run some ATF fluid through it when it gets warmer out and if it doesn't fix it I'll pick up some used heads for cheap.

maximagxe90--there's been plenty of VE's that have lasted a long time too, longer than some VG's. You won't see as many high mileage VE's because there's not as many VE's to begin with, only a limited amount made in 3 years verses a total of 6 years of VG's being made in the 3rd gen, and three of those 6 years the only motor available was the VG.

Also people prematurely call a VE dead because of VTC noise.

Ah who cares which one is better. They both contributed to the now-dominant VQ.

So look at it this way: the technologically-advanced VE brought the venerable VG into the 21st century. Although I don't know how the combination of "E" and "G" equals "Q"...

ok Sorry it took so long for me to get back with you. My best time at the track was a 9.40 in the 1/8 But that was with a bad 60 and only going have throttle in 1st and second to try to keep the clutch from slipping but it still sliped in third. That was also with some wholes burt into my cross over pipe. This was done on 6 to 7 psi. My trap speeds were nice though. The best was 79mph in the 1/8

Roso Im running the 300z manifolds with some modes done to them to get the flow to come from both sides to the crossover pipe to turbo. No reverse Y here. That doesnt seem to work as well and seems to be to easy.

how much of a difference would you say advancing your timing makes. I use premium in my VG always!

Look at the 1/4 times. Some people did advanced timing and minor mods like y-pipe and pop charger and broke into the low 16's from like 17 stock.

302,200 miles and still going....

Never timed it, but nothing (and I do mean nothing) can beat me off the line.

Yeah I bet, are you in the low 16's yet? lol

The only reason I would get a VG maxima is to turbo it, or let my mom drive it

youre wasting money on premium since the VG stock will take 87 or 89 or whatever it is.

advancing your timing will make it so youre not wasting money on premium. just because its more expensive, doesnt mean its good.

It's really a funny thing about my Max. I'll put my left foot on the brake, rev it up to 1,500, and when the light turns green, I floor it. Two seconds later, I'm doing 40 watching the frustrated faces of drivers in supposedly faster rods racing up to catch me. Then, to prove how superior they are, they zoom on by me doing 60 while I'm content to obey the 40mph speed limit.

Heh-heh...

ummm what does that mean. I know to use the highest octane availble. But 180cc injectors will not suply enough fuel to run 7 psi. They might have enough to run 3 to 4 psi. But im just saying it nice how well this motor has still stayed together.
