Clutch related question
I didn't notice this before, but I was able to shift into third while my car is doing around 30-35 ish with the clutch engaged, and was able to move back to neutral without ever disengaging the clutch. I can also do that with the fifth gear, and it is not consistent, i.e. I can only do at certain times, like when the speed is quite low. My question is that is this normal? or should I be checking for something, I know my clutch is a little worn cause when my car is in third, and I try to accelerate from 25mph, I will hear a whirrr noise, like something is slipping for a brief moment before the car speeds up to speed and the whirr noise goes away. Thanks.
it could be normal there are certain point in the rpm when the syncros naturally mesh
i shift without the clutch on a daily bases it takes some practice but it can be done and it greatly extends the life of the clutch. ive read out people getting over 300k miles on one clutch buy doing this mainly truck drivers because they are very skilled at shifting.
basicly when your excerating and let off of the excelerator the gear has no load on it for a brief second in which time it can be poped out of gear and then as the RPMs drop it can be poped into the next gear without touching the clutch pedal or working the syncros. like i said it takes some practice but its pretty common knowledge

Hate to burst your bubble, but you really don't want to do that. You will wear your synchronizers out quick. Use the clutch! The reason trucks get that many miles or more out of a clutch, is, #1 they are built a lot heavier, #2 You do not use the clutch in a truck except to start and stop, and #3 Truck transmissions are not synchronized. You could not shift a truck transmission like a car transmission. If you do, you'll grind the hell out of the gears, unless you double clutch it. So like I said, it may be fun or something to do in a car, but I would strongly recommend you don't.
Changing gear without clutch in any kind of box is everyday bread for those who drive for living, racing. But you need to know u rig better than u pockets if u do that; big or small. Try that and learn. All learning costs, here costs might be paid by 'some boxes' for bad pupils...
Gee, i wonder why i need a clutch for???
There are reasons why things(parts) are installed and made for. i would rather spend the money on having a clutch replaced than having the tranny rebuilt completely to change out all the gears, syncros etc that where damaged and abused. use the clutch, it has its propose, its like using your engine to brake, just use your brakes, cheaper to replace rotors and pads than an engine.

Clutch? Its all useless dead weight like brakes...
Seriously: I dont use clutch after I got my maxima. GXE auto. Brakes? All the time after passing BMW's...
More seriously: yes, if u have manual, u have to be kicking THAT all the time... I was speaking what can be done, and what people do with various rigs. Can be done even in maxima when in desperate need to move the vehicle... In various racing machines no clutch is used, saves time splinters...
repeat after me: buy auto...

dead weight ?? if you continue to drive a car(not a truck, or a race car that is rebuilt countless times w/ infanite$$ funds) in the manner that its not supposed to, over time the max will be dead weight. But hey drive your car the way you want. just dont want the "oh i can shift my max with out using my clutch", lemmings following each other, then later "oh my max wont move, or i am having tranny problems", thread being posted with
auto are for those who just want a daily driver, live in citys, or just dont want the hassle of doing the work of shifting.

love the 5 spd, the command of the 190+ ponies at my fingers,
SHIFT_pass slow matic
Autos are for the ones that got a max (178,500 miles) for $400 and just decided to leave it there. But I still got my big truck (10 speed, 1,511,611 miles) and my pickup (soon to have 2 trannys in it, 451,385 miles), if I feel like driving a standard.

- 200ponies under my toe, fingers are used for steering & cellphone...
Autos last 500k if iq is ok, its that way with any electromechanics marvel that actually the maxima Auto is. Its Fantastic box, best ever I've driven! (now pls dont try to tst my mileage all over the globe)
True: Maxima auto was not good enough for average man or Nissan mechanic... thanks to HQ wiring savings policy. Those ! poor skinny wirings. But that does not hinder if its owner know basics in computing.
Basically just dont drive with slipping auto-tranny, repair the reason behind. Most often starved solenoids...http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/748507/1
Well, personally, I'd rather have a standard, but my max came with an auto. It works fine, I'll leave it there. And I'll have to agree with wiking, as long as you keep good tabs on maintenance, it should last damn near forever.

Its piece of cake after u 'know u car',as u said. Will even save tranny, sync rings and clutch = actually lasts longer. ONLY if u are pro. Its like playing piano: have continusly to practice.
But most cannot and clutch is for them... For them: just dont do it.
I belong to that 'most cannot' -club. But as told, have been without clutch and driven without breaking tranny, the question is only the gear teeth spin speed and your ability to listen and recognize the moment for swap. There is no need to leave the car to be robbed on the streetside..
