Timing Belt??

Hey guys,

I recently bought a '93 GXE, it has 273Km on it. Now, honestly I dont know a whole bunch about cars and so to say this is my first car. I think the timing belt was probably replaced around at 150Km (the dealer I bought it from didnt have the info on this), so should I get it replaced and wat happenns if it breaks (how big is that expense) cuz after buying the car I am really not in a position to dish out another 600 bucks for getting the timing belt replaced.

Also what are the common things that I should do in order to maintain my car so that it doesnt break down.

Thanks for all the help guys.

If it breaks then the valves hit the pistons you start looking for a new engine. Where did you get the $600 quote? The dealer? Take it to a private mechanic, it can probably be done for much cheaper.

if your timing belt breaks, you'll be in for a whole lot more than $600 worth of work.
an independant shop should be able to do the timing belt and waterpump for about $450 US

two words, Shadetree mechanic (or was it three words?)

got my waterpump and timing belt replaced for 200 bucks(parts cost included), it also helps that his son is my best friend. but still, find a shadetree mechanic with some reps, buy him a case of beer, and most likely he will get the job done for you quick.

51,000 original miles? u got insider info?

I think he said 273k and some vague probability maybe changes... That might end 123k miles on the belt. Quite good... Some want to play russian roulette, let them play. Its not gonna be long.

ANYWAY: the belt tighness is easy to check... that gives an idea how it might be. Open uppre three screws and push from the middle: should bend down about ½inch.

Yeah I got the inside track, guy across the street. It was his second car, bought from his daughter who got it new. He just did all the major tuneup stuff plus tires and brakes, scored it for 3400. Nice deal just trying to get up on the maintenance. I'll check on thast belt when I get a chance.
