Need Maxima help

Well Ive been working my *** off so I couold get my max up and running again. My question to you guys is how do i know the difference from just the timing belt going out / the valves going and breaking the pistions?

Now I plan on buying everything this weekend i need to get the car running again but i dont want to buy a Sh*tload of parts just to see it was a timing belt. In most cases i know its the valves and pistons getting messed up but i also was told that if i was going under 40 (which I was) it is more likely just the belt. I dont really no much cars and my dad wont help me because hes a lazy punk so I come to you guys

im not sure, I know when i was driving the car onto I-95 the car just stoped taking off, I was giving it gas but it kept slowing down.

And i dont know if it broke or what not because I do not know how to get down to it.

Im stupid when it comes to under the hood of cars.

My stepdad is trying to tell me to go find a place that will sell me a new Belt kit and 2 Cylinder heads and a gasket, But I keep telling him why if we didnt see what the problem was then i would be wasting my money, But he keeps telling me in most cases with older cars like mine when the belt breaks that the valves or pistons (sorry) break or something.

well your step dad is correct about your motor. It is an interference motor so if the t belt breaks then the valves are toast. Maybe not all of them but at least some. I got a 92 GXE because the owner didnt replace the belt and it broke on him. I got it cheap and rebuilt the heads (it bent every valve in the motor) for around $500 including the gaskets and valves.

First thing is first. Take the side cover off and see if the belt is broken. Or just take the valve cover off and turn the motor over by hand to see if it moves the cams. If the belt is broken then you might as well get a new motor or take the heads off and get them rebuilt like I did.

Well, We just gont done taking the tire off and trying to spin it by hand, IT would no go anywhere, So then i got a huge wrench and it could barley move by that so...

Is this a good sign or bad sign? Does the whole motor need replaced or can i just get the heads replaced.

im seeing flashbacks, LOL. if your cars in neutral and you cant spin the motor by hand (with wrench) your valves are toast most likely due to the timing belt broken. (glad i have a chain) youll have to remove the heads and have them rebuilt, milled ect... the whole bit. check your cams and rockers and see if they cracked or chipped, my cams had a chunk taken out of them and i needed new ones......

Well, After talking it over with my (step) Dad we might just get a JDM and pay his buddy to put it in. Because it seems everytime we fix something on my car another thing breaks, (got a brand new tranny in my car already).

And if we dont do that I think im going to just pick up another max depending on the cost of this project. But I shall know tommarwo IF i should junk it or not (many other things wrong with it too) just needed the belt or ECH and gasket to get it running again, but if so many other things need work Im just going to get another max.

Thanks for all the replys guys.
