Is This a Good Deal

How's this deal for a '92 Maxima SE 5-spd

http://www.infiniti-bloomington.com/...toryId=2070445

I called the representative, and he says that its selling for $3995, whcih is considerably under the KBB retail value of $4600. The car is loaded with leather, sunroof, Bose cassette system, and both the interior and exteior look to be in great shape. Mileage around 93,ooo. Only thing it doesn't have is antilock brakes, which would be nice in MN. The car was a one owner driven by an older adult (50's).

Anyways, I'm going to try to get down there sometime in the next few days to check it out. What do you guys think?

The link doesn't seem to be working properly, but inspect the car and if you hear the VTCs tick, talk the price down. I paid less than that for my car, but VE 5-speeds w/ less than 100k are a rare commodity.

that should work now for pics. Anyways, how loud will these 'ticks' be. This will be my first 3rd gen I've ever been in. I'm sure its outside, so it'll be a cold start, too, which is good, becasue I heard that the ticking is more noticeable then. It is a warrantied fix though, isnt it?

here's a link to the dealer site BTW

Warrantied fix? It's not a recall by Nissan. The car is obviously out of warranty, and I don't know what the policy is for any extended warranty. The VTCs are LOUD, and the best word I can use to describe the noise is a 'clack'.

You will know it right on start up if the VTCs tick. It kind of sounds like a diesel.

Like Mizeree said, I would not let that discourage you from buying the car, but use it as a tool to talk them down. Tell them you know about the VTC problem and that it costs $1500+ to get it fixed. That might give you a little leverage.

It looks to me like a very nice car that was taken care of, at least cosmetically. It is hard to know for sure without documentation, though. Sometimes people are good about being careful with the inside (or park it in a garage at home and/or work), but never change the oil or get the car serviced regularly.

Buying any used car is a crapshoot, but that seems like a good one to take a chance on. The price is pretty fair, IMO. You know that it is at a dealership and they always have room to go down, no matter what BS they feed you. They are probably only into that car for a couple thousand at the most.

hahahah...that reminds me. I was on the phone with the rep asking the price and he told me he took the car for $3995 when the guy traded in for a G35x, he descried all the options and stuff. Then when I asked him what the price was, he said $3995. Riiiight...dealers sell cars for what they paid for it....

Anyways, I think this may finally be it...
Now just to find some 17" '02 SE rims, and a short throw...and a y-pipe, and FSTB, and clear corners, and a catback...then maybe a stillen and a new cat....and the Jim Wolfe ECU....then I'll be done. Oh yeah, almost forgot, and katskins, and the 9004/9007 conversion...

He may have given the previous owner $3995 but raised the price of the G35 on the other end to compensate, that car definitely isn't worth $3995 as a trade-in, maybe $2000. As far as it being a good deal...$3995 isn't a good deal on that car, I consider a good deal to be a lower price than MOST people would pay for a vehicle, I doubt you will find too many people who will pay $3995 for that car in good shape, $3000 would seem like a good deal to me.

It is from a dealer though, so I should be able to talk down to at least $3750....still at $4k, it is what I want...and I'd be happy with it

umm, try finding a VE 5-speed with leather for under 100k miles, period.

That is a fairly good deal on the car, especially if the VTCs don't tick. If you scoured the entire country, maybe you could find a similar one with that kind of low mileage for $3k. I kind of doubt it, though.

I paid $2500 for mine and it had 140k on it, the VTCs ticked, the clutch pedal bracket was broken and the cruise didn't work. I thought I got a pretty good deal.

Sure, you can find one for $2500-$3,000, but it is going to have probably 120-175k and need some work. Engine work, paint job, interior replaced, etc. A good paint job costs over $1k.

If paying cash I bet they have about a $750-1000 range to negotiate on that price tag, also keep in mind with your offer that there may be other "administrative" or "doc" fees that they may charge you.

Your initial question was "is this a good deal", that is a matter of opinion as you can compare my answer and RedMax92SE's. For less than $4,000 you could easily pick up a 4th gen in decent shape AND afford a few extra mods (I got mine for $2,800 w/ y-pipe, CAI, STS, stereo system, new struts, clutch, tires, fuel injectors, etc.) If I had to have a 3rd gen I would find a VG SE for <$2,500 and turbo it...for less than $1500 you could be pushing 250-300 hp reliably and have MUCH more fun than a VE.

I agree that it is a nice vehicle, havn't seen a VE in that color in decent shape, so if you must have it I would offer the dealer $3200 cash and tell him it's a nice car but you could get the newer body style for the price he's asking and let him think about it for a day if he says no.
