Warpspeed, probably the worst purchase I ever made (long)

OK. So I purchased a manifold back exhaust from warpspeed (y-pipe, cat, b-pipe, muffler) Once I got it out of the box I could not believe how poor it was. Maybe I was spoiled witht the Stillen exhaust I had on my 1995, but I think not, because I think Stillen actually tests their parts for fitment and quality. The flanges to mount the b-pipe and y-pipe to the cat are terrible! They may work but it is an extremley poor design. Also the exhaust is held up only by the hangers near the cat and the two at the muffler. This leaves an unwelded, pressure fit section of pipe literally 7 feet long just suspended over the ground. Whats more is that the clone Q muffler hangers are so poorly laid out that it rubs against the tow hook and constantly scrapes and vibrates. Now for the worst- the muffler tip sits 3 inches past the end of the bumper, the entire muffler section is slightly crooked, and I know there are exhaust gasses leaking from these unwelded pressure fittings! Warpspeed says "get them welded when you get a chance" I say why the ____ didn't they weld flanges and hanger bars to these pieces in the first place! How hard would it be! Its like 89 cents for another 2 gaskets and 5 bucks for hardware. I would have been willing to pay that for a sealed exhaust. I will NEVER buy Warpspeed parts again. The only good part is the sound, but even that is ruined by metal on metal vibration. I want to cry when I look at my car now.

They dont weld it together because of shipping plus there may be some other aftermarket exhaust systems you may want to integrate. The muffler sticks out three inches because some aftermarket mufflers are smaller. Which would you rather have too much or too little? I never had a problem with my flanges and they fit perfectly. Now for the hangers, if you really need more make them yourself, but the stock hangers should be enough.

Be careful when you diss warpspeed on this section of the forum.

Well, for all the loyal Warpspeed owners you can get mad all you want. This was my experience dealing with a company who is well represented by Maxima owners, and well reccomended. I have no problem making my own parts, and I could in theory take the pipe apart, cut it myself, refit it and use the metalshop to weld the pipe together. Fact is, this is a COMPLETE system. Complete means all encompassing, no additional parts needed, I don't need to continue to make my point on this one. In my mind the whole is the sum of its parts, and if Warpspeed cant get that straight they need to make it clear what you are getting. I would have been happier getting price gouged at Stillen.

When I got my Y pipe a couple years ago I was real dissapointed with the flex sextion. It simply DOES NOT FLEX, POS. Yeah, thats terrific for our titanium re-inforced manifold studs . I see that they have since made some changes, but I don't know.

Some research should always be done before making big purchases. There have been plenty of posts on the full exhaust system, and wsp even has all of their directions on their website. FACT is wsp is one of the few that offers performance parts for 3rd gens. WSP is a great company with great products.

i agree warpspeed makes good products, i am sure if you call them and explain to them nicely they would be willing to work something out for you,,because a lot of members from maxima.org buy a lot of products from them.

FACT is, I don't want to work something out with them, because I can see the problems I have to fix, and feel I can fix them. I have already contacted them to let them know what I am disappointed with solely as feedback. Research is key to buying new, (expensive) products, I agree, and with the options we have for tuning parts, I only had a few choices. I had heard nothing bad about Warpspeed save for a few complaints about the y-pipe clearance, but never did I come across someone with a complaint like mine. I don't want to whine but when you buy a complete system don't you think it should fit right?

I'm going to have to side with eric95se on this one. Years of selling parts and installing them has given me great insight into the retail/wholesale worlds. Why the heck should anyone not be completely satisfied when buying a product "as advertised"? I don't mind spending money on name brands and extra money on great quality and workmanship. It is worth the extra dough. However, I want what I expect from a company. Case in point, I could fabricate my own exhaust system myself in the time it would take to make corrections on the one he purchased. Afterall, I have the shop, tools, and supplies at hand. The question is... Why should I? The point in buying that product is to save yourself the trouble of time and effort.

Eric spent money he worked for to buy a product highly recommended... He feels cheated/disappointed... Bravo for giving an honest perspective, Eric.

Maybe you should factor in cost vs. what you get.

I think the Warpspeed set up is actually just an assortment of pieces put together, not really a "ready to go" exhaust.

Most people buy the y-pipe and sometimes the b pipe and use their own muffler or take it to a shop to get the correct fitment. Fixing a few minor things yourself and saving a few hundred dollars doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.

What would the same set up cost you from Stillen? How about GReddy? I have a GReddy cat-back and when new, that cost more than the entire set up you have, including the y-pipe.

You get what you pay for and I think the Warpspeed stuff is a pretty good deal and from what I gather from other members, will work well if you do a little bit of fine tuning yourself.

It is just like most everything else for the 3rd gen. Some things have to be altered or fine tuned.

Warpspeeds claim:

Complete 2-1/2" system for 89-99 Maxima or Infinity

$590.00

INCLUDES:

2-1/2" MANDREL BENT ALUMINIZED STEEL Y PIPE WITH 2 BOLT FLANGES
Y PIPE FEATURES 2-1/2" LINED FLEX SECTION TO ELIMINATE BEES IN THE CAN SOUND
2-1/2" HIGH FLOW CATALYTIC CONVERTER (RACE PIPE OPTIONAL)
2-1/2" B PIPE WITH RESONATOR, TYPICALLY 14-18" IN LENGTH FOR MAXIMUM SOUND REDUCTION
2-1/4" AVAILABLE FOR 1989-1994
2-1/2" MAGNAFLOW STAINLESS SINGLE TIP MUFFLER ( LOUDER THAN STOCK )
ALL GASKETS, HANGERS AND BOLTS INCLUDED

Not what I got! I just want to make it clear that this was a complete suprise to me based on what I had seen and heard form others. I think that it is fine stuff has to be altered, I really do. But when there is no mention and it is billed as a complete system, it shouldn't be like this. Let's not protect a company based on what others have said in the past. Also thanks nelledge for seeing the point I was trying to make with this post.

the too long issue has been documented before.
I consider the too long issue to be BS when you are buying what is being sold as a complete system
if I sell a customer a b-pipe and a muffler for the same car, they want it to be exact no cutting required. They have **** fits when it has to be modified.

I do see your point, but the point I am trying to make is that no where on the wsp website does it say that the pieces are already put together and ready to go. They just offer all of the pieces in one package for a better price then purchasing them al la carte. I don't think they are trying to swindle you or be cheap about their products.
What did they say when you talked to them?

Check out what this guy did with his wsp set up.

I wrote them an e-mail, we'll see what they say. For the record I was very pleased with the people that run the shop and they were all very nice, but pleasantries go out the window when what they make isn't what they advertise. Internetautomart, you sell b-pipes and mufflers for the same car, but they are not specifically meant to fit together, so your comment does not relate to this issue. The muffler and pipe were meant to go together...and I can see why someone would have a fit if they have no resources (welding equip, cutoff tools) to complete these "adjustments"

Your letting one bad experience weigh more heavily over hundreds of happy customers? I think if people expect way too much out of a product of course they will be let down. Warpspeed would probably give you your money back if you are that unhappy, so it all comes down to if you want to quit crying about it and just put it all on, or cry some more and see if the exhaust magically fixes itself.

mtnbikeair- wow, there is no need to get so angry. From what I have seen in this forum today, there are those who are blinded by loyalty, and there are those who have reasonable expectations from a product. I am not saying Warpspeed makes bad PARTS (the y-pipe is awesome!) I am saying they messed up by saying they provide a COMPLETE system (no system requiring fabrication is complete!). I expected a good low-cost exhaust that fit my car. I thought that I would see comprimises in the materials used and the hardware. To make this clear I was not expecting an amazingly perfect exhaust, just what they advertised. I didn't get it. No I will go cry and watch the exhaust move 5 inches back and 2 inches up where it is supposed to be

I think you missed the point of the WSP system. The b-pipe and corresponding muffler are not designed to be a seamless unit. The b-pipe was designed with flexibility of choice in mind. Let me ask you, did you chop 3 inches off of the b-pipe off when you attached the muffler? Dallas designed the b-pipe to be compatible with a variety of mufflers, so he made the end extra long in case the muffler you decided to use with it was shorter than stock. As for the hangers, I bought a b-pipe and it had all the stock hangers included. There aren't any additional ones because there aren't additional mounting points on the chassis AFAIK. When I ordered my unit Dallas told me that the b-pipe should be welded together. I brought it to a shop and they put it all together and it fits great on my car. Maybe WSP's website is a little lacking on specifics but you also have an obligation to be an informed consumer. For $150 its a pretty good deal.

Mizeree- Fair point about the adjustability. I had read that is how it was done, and it is an economical way to fit a wide range of exhausts. Problem is, when I spoke to Dallas about the complete system purchase, he knew exactly what muffler (clone Q), what tip, and exactly what car (91 Max) it was going on. As an informed businessman and custom exhaust builder, is it not his responsibility to factor this in in the production of a complete system? He couldn't cut it himself?

Uhhh, no. How would he know where you liked the tips to sit? He doesn't custom-make each kit, he just puts it all in a box and sends it off. For the price, I wouldn't expect anything more than that, personally.

Did you specifically ask, or verify that he would do that though? If you didn't he most likely did not touch it because he knew it would have to be welded together, and such. I guess I would rather have room for error than mistakenly have it be slightly too short.

Then again I guess I paid for the luxury of having it all fit the first time in my garage with the Greddy.

Okay, he manufactures exhausts for Nissan Maximas, he knwe what car it was going on, what exhaust...do you think he thinks people love to be able to stand on their tip to wash the top of their car? He should have an idea of what it looks like (he did test the kit on a 3rd gen prior to mass production, right?) and if he dosen't keep this in mind when shipping out parts than it is foolish on his part. But maybe not. He knows if someone isn't satisfied they will be upset, then go get it fixed, no problem on his part..right? It is frustrating, but that is how business works. I will be happy with it, I just want to let anyone else considering this that WSP's site provides no clue as to what you are going to have to do to have an asthetically appealing exhaust and not a rear firing bumper cannon poking out of your car.
