The other possibility is that your timing chain(s) is slapping around a touch. VE engines have antiknocking sensors and will retard the timing if knocking is detected. VE's just run notoriously noisy, and generally you tend to get a lot of chain and valve train noise. Throw in the VTC's and you got a whole symphony of sounds that sound aweful, but thats just sorta the way they run -- noisy.

if you do advance timing be sure also to use higher octane gas cause if you don't, there could be knocking and your timing could get retarded and you will lose power. but that doesn't happen over night unless you got some really really really bad gas in your car.

I get that too..
It didn't happen all the time, I remember my car used to be quiet at one point. I am suspecting the busted Catalytic converter having something to do with it, plus I have other problems which may be causing it.. Right now though, as long as it runs, I'm happy...
Timing is supposed to be electronically controlled I think, at least that's what I was told by some mechanic... it's not like on the VGs.
The timing chain... u should take a look at it, I should too i suppose, we are running into the higher milage.. 100+ k...
