can someone point me to some threads about installing a VQ30DE in a 3rd gen?

As far as we know there is only one 3rd gen w/ a VQ in existance, and there's no FAQ, thread, How-to, etc. on doing it. Most likely your thread will be locked soon like all of the other "engine swap" threads for third gens.

 

Why is that?

I thought they only sold the VG30DE kit for RWD

 

Actually a few 5G guys I've talked to around here tell me the VQ30DE has a stouter block, and thus responds better to mods. They say the VQ35DE is pretty wrung out from the factory, and thus breaks easier.

 

Well that is all together pretty much wrong.

 

Call Stillen with part number VQ89-94v30. Their number is 714-540-5566. THe cost is like 3500 But you know third genners are cheap.

 

Just drop a 454 big block in there.....

Stillen doesn't offer that conversion kit yet.

I just called and they did.

 

Please elaborate with specifics. The ones I've talked to that said that have owned and modified several Maxes. I'm no mechanic, so I can't say for sure personally. But when I told them I was thinking of plunking down for a 5G-B, they all said 5G-As were rather more responsive to modifcation. Maybe I misunderstood them...?

 

I know what part is supposed to be "weaker". What part did they mention. I'd take the weaker engine and the 260hp(vs 190hp) any day of the week. But that's just me I guess

 

All I recall them saying was that the VQ35 block was not as stout as the VQ30 or VQ30-K. Maybe it was an aluminum vs. cast iron thing...

Ill have to ask them again what exactly they mean or are talking about. Their opinions surprised me at first too, since one would immediately think the VQ35 would be anyone's easy favorite simply because of its factory output.

I probably should just get a 5G-B anyhow, since I have no mechanical inclinations, and have even less capital to spend on mods if I were.

 

All VQs have an aluminum block and steel sleeves. Some say the VQ35 rods are weaker as the motors can't stand as much boost. ie.. at 400 or so hp. But anyone who is going to get there, knows the diff.

 

That's probably what they were talking about then, and I botched the description.

 

so what ever happened to that VQ maxima? i remember seeing it in june, then it just disappeared..
