the AWD conversion is not as hard as you think.

 

I did it on my Big Red Wagon. same procedure, basically...

 

nissan had a variation on the chassis with AWD.

So would an automatic Ecu would work in a manual transmission and vise-versa? If they were the same engines of course?

 

Auto ECU works with manual, not the other way around.

 

Hi, I'm from New Zealand and have a 3rd gen max. I wana do a 5spd swap but they didnt make ANY manual 3rd gens here, is there anyway i can convert my max 2 manual w/o importing the parts i need from the states? I love my max and i dont want 2 sell it and buy something with a manual trans alrdy. Would any other gen max trans work in my 3rd gen? I'm pretty sure 4gen + came out in manual. Hope ya can help!

 

No. A 4th gen Transmission won't work. You'll have to find an already imported vehicle you can get parts from, or import your own parts for the swap.

Ive been told that i MIGHT be able 2 put a jap nissan SSS bluebird trans into our 3rd gens, heres some info i got on it.

Kiwi Max's auto trans only. However, the auto trans is the same as used in the U12 Bluebird (RL4F02A) - except the Max used an electronically controlled throttle body (RE4FO2A), so a manual transmission from the same car will bolt to the block (RS5F31A). This trans will handle the horsepower of the V6, as it's also used in the Bluebird SSS turbo models (probably with a LSD diff - RS5F31V). Being a Nissan, would expect the clutch & brake pedal assembly from the same car to fit, and possibly the gear-shift linkage as well - although this could be area where you get stuck, as you may have to lengthen the linkage to fit. Am guessing that the clutch would be hydraulically activated, as opposed to using cable only. From memory, the clutch pedal bracket already has a cruise control cut-out switch threaded into it - you would have to get another switch & either wire it inline with the brake switch, or wire it direct to the ASCD controller (unless the wiring plug is already there taped out of the way).

Only other thing you'd have to worry about is where the starter motor mounts - on the Auto Bluebirds, they mount under the inlet manifold, whereas there is no room on the Max for this, hence low down in front of the trans. The manual may mount in on the transmission facing into the block - you could get to work if this the case. Not sure if the auto & manual bellhousing is interchangeable...

That gearbox comination is unlikely to work and also, the 31 series gearbox is very weak so even if you manage to adapt it up and get it working, the V6 would munch it up for breakfast. That same gearbox is used in GA16DE powered N14 Pulsars

If you can find a bellhousing from an American V6, then you can use a RS5F50 series gearbox which is also used in the FWD Bluebird

 

so the pulsar gti-r gearbox will bolt onto the block? and i'm guessing i will need a j30 max bellhousing right? I'm a bit of a newb with cars so sry if i'm asking some dumb questions..

 

The GTiR geabox will not bolt into your engine bay very well.

Sorry, I was at work and did not have enough time to finish that post.

The U12 FWD Bluebird came with this gearbox and would require a quite simple conversion of fitting the V6 bellhousing. This is the bit that has your clutch inside and joins the gear part of the gearbox to the motor.

I am doing this conversion myself right now so I know it can work.

Basically, you need a J30 manual bellhousing and the RS5F50 gearbox. I did a quick check with Nissan yesterday and the J30 manual bellhousing can still be bought brand new for a reasonably cheap sum of money(under AUS$300)

RS5F50 gearboxes sell for around AUS$600 and then you just need driveshafts to suit, which any reputable driveshaft shop should be able to source for you.

I would really suggest getting an aftermarket lightened flywheel and clutch to make the manual conversion much more worthwhile and enjoyable

 

can you buy j30 manual bellhousing in nz/aus? no manual j30s were made in nz so i didnt think they'd sell the manual bellhousing here.

 

Call Nissan dealer and they should be able to atleast source it for you, if not I will see how much it would cost to send it to you.

Yes, they will handle boost. Hence why they are used in the GTiR and the SR20DET Bluebirds. I will also be boosting my car eventually

However, sticky/grippy tyres will cause problems and 3rd gear is the weak gear. I got photos to prove it as well

short answer: nope.
long answer: if you had the money to make it work, you would buy the right parts.

 

Not much is compatible between the two cars.

 

if somehow you found a VE5 tranny that needed a new diff you could take one from a 4th gen LSD tranny (ie the Infiniti I30t, rare though they are). The clutch is the same for all 1985-2001 5spd maximas regardless of engine (flywheels are engine-specific tho). Past that everything else is different I think. Little things like shift ***** and the rubber pads on the pedals will probably interchange too... but that's pretty much it.
