AFAIK nothing bad happens, and performance does not change. This has been my experience. My VTCs tick like mad, but the car itself runs fine, so I ain't losing one bit of sleep over it.

When people ask about the noise it makes, I just tell them my engine is always "in VTiCK"!

so if nothing bad will happen to the engine and the performance is basically the same then why fix them? is it just because of the tick that they make and you want to stop the ticking?

Umm, because there have been cases of the VTCs breaking apart and totally destroying an engine. And they DO make a difference in performance, its just that you become used to the disabled VTCs. When people put new/rebuilt VTCs in they notice an immediate difference from before.

But how common are disasters like that? I for one do not have the cash, know-how, tools or time to have this done. And in addition, there are several stories of VTC repairs undoing themselves no long after. They can't be that important if the car runs fine without them.

2 or 3 occurances out of several thousand (?) 3G owners here = enough rarity for me not to fix 'em.

Dry sump lubrication? Sure. Expensive though. But a preluber might work. Thought about one for a few years

Just putting holes in the valve covers won't do anything. Has to be inside the oiling system. Which none of us know should be screwing with

Ahh, I forgot what they're called. It just stores about 1qt of oil under pressure and turns on just before start up. Then a few seconds later re-presureizes and shuts off. I think kits sell for around $160. Its supposed to make a huge difference on start up engine wear.
