Removing Cat Back

I need to replace my Cat and Cat Back on my Maxima. As much I have tried to loosen bolts - no luck. I am considering drilling off the bolts, is this a bad idea? I havn't purchased new exhaust yet as I wanted to be sure I could get old one off. Autozone sells Bonsal at a low price, does the SE exhaust with dual tips fit the same as GXE single tip, my neighbor has a 91 SE and the mounting looks the same as my 92 GXE. Thanks for any help.

Do you have access to an angle grinder or any kind of torch? I find that even a $2 pensil torch can make our lives much easier when it comes to loosening up the nuts.

Yeah the mounting is all the same, i had an exhaust shop do a cat back for my VG, and it bolted up with no problems to my VE. Well the only problem was bad catalytic converter gaskets, but they survived about 12 years, so no complaints.

I have a catalytic converter question (and I can't post threads yet). I have a '92 SE. Can I just cut the catalytic converter off? It's about shot and is killing my gas mileage. I don't have the extra cash right now to replace it. I don't think there is a downstream O2 sensor to goof up the computer and Alabama does not have emissons testing. Can I do this with out making my car run worse?

You mean just taking it off and then having about a 16" hole in your exhaust?? your car will still run, it will smell terrible ( at least mine did) and its so incredibly loud that you will start to hate yourself. But i would just wait until you can afford to replace it

a. it's a federal crime to remove your cat.
b. it will hurt your mileage
c. a cat only runs like $100-120 installed, save up and get it replaced.

You can get a carsound high flow cat cheaper than $100 and intstall it yourself. There are four bolts and two gaskets. The bolts might be a pain to break free, but you can cut them (as was mentioned earlier) and replace them.

Then something is wrong with your cat, I'm guessing.

That's no big deal trust me. If I can weld anyone can. Well except for the bunch of NW goons that emptied my gas bottle in ONE day!

Even a cheapo 110v low amperage mig with gas can do that. Easy.

if you're not in an emmissions check zone, and have a tire iron, you can always knock a nice hole down the middle of the crud inside.

hey, i'm from the sticks...

same here , when I first bought my Max some jerk cut the Exauste pipe from the end of the cat, (basicaly all the muffler off along with some pipe). Had to buy one that same week.

Car was so obsenely loud, and if you drove it more than a few minutes it would give you a headache. I dont thik it was cuz of the noise but becuase of the Carbon dioxide fumes.

Once you cut your cat off, your going to wish you had a bad gas milage problem .

No, I was planning to put a piece of pipe in its place. Had the no exhaust system thing going on the van I traded for my Max (the cross over pipe had completely rusted out). Never again, it was like driving a tank, only louder.

I didn't know it would be that cheap. I'll check into it as soon as I have the extra cash.
