The past 4 years of being in NE Missouri has finally made my Texas grown max rust . While I was polishing/waxing today, I noticed a familiar orange spot on the sillplate of the rear passenger door . The paint has started to bubble, and little orange streaks are appearing. The car was hit on the rear passenger side once in about '95, NEARLY totaling the car. The only evidence of this wreck is the un-sanded, un-cleared paint on the rear passenger doorway, not visible from the outside. I'm thinking the rust sprouted from there possibly being a small hole somwhere underneith after the repairs were completed.

I'm going to take my paint/rust stripper wheel and my drill out there and remove the paint and rust before it becomes a hole, but I was wondering if somone could recommend an off-the-shelf rattle can primer that will actually seal the metal and keep the rust from coming back in that spot.

The only way is oilspray inside door etc, inside chassis cavities. Whatever else u do, after 1 and half yrs, rust will pop up. Oil is different as it continues to 'live' and spread into cracks years after sparying, filling the microcracks that always form as car is used. It will push moisture out, and form an fil blocking oxygen access to metal.

 

Well, o'reilly's was closed today for inventory or somthing so I couldn't get the primer, but I got impatient and just finished buffing the rust off. It looks like it was just 2 little spot welds where they welded the new rear right side of the car on. It came off easy with my paint/rust stripper and a wire wheel, and I think a little primer will seal it off just fine. Its not visible from the outside of the car with the door shut, so I'm not going to worry about getting it repainted until I'm wealthy enough to get the whole car painted. I'll get a disposable camera or somthing tomorrow and take a pic of it before I seal it up and post the pic somtime in a month or 2 whenever I use up the film.
