Jumpy Shift- Should I be worried?

About a year ago, I had my Auto tranny replaced on my SOHC engined Maxima. The mechanic used a tranny from a 1997 model, and ensured that it would be compatible. I didn't worry about it at first because a friend suggested that it's just software. When shifting from 1st to 2nd the tranny shifts agressively enough to jump, like a hard shift. It's smooth every other gear. I also noticed that in Power mode, it revs MUCH more freely, the low end seems unobsticted (is that a real word???). Anyways, should I be worried? Recently I noticed that from Park to Drive, I have to move the lever about 1/2 shift down to get it to engage, then its fine. Anyone w/ some advice/ experience?

woa i've never heard of anyone using a 97 tranny in a 3rd gen. not till u anyway.
i imagine he might have been pulling you leg and just put in another 3rd gen trans. i thought the bellhouse casing were different and it wouldnt even come close to bolting up. anyway, with the shifting, sounds like the old missing shifter bushing, which is a little cheap piece of rubber that gets rotted/worn off and make the shift loose. its located under the heat shield of the catalytic converter, a new one is 1-2$. this is not exact but : you remove a cotter pin, slide a washer off, slip it on after lubing it with brake fluid of something akin to that replace washer and pin and you're done, takes about 20 min at most.

definitly couldnt be from a 97 max because they have a different belhousing bolt patern

maybe could be from a 97 quest van but i think they got the VE trans which proboly has diferent elctronics

the park and drive thing could be worn shifter bushing or in need of adjustment

That's what he said. He said it had 35,000 miles on a wrecked 97 Maxima. Shouldn't there be some #'s on it to ID it? Anyway, anyone know why it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd gear?

hard shift....fluid pressure? valve body might have something funky stuck in it? check the fluid level.

or maybe...just maybe it's an entirely wrong tranny for the car?

easy way to ID if they really did a 97+ tranny on it....look under the tranny area...do you see a tranny fluid pan (metal pan..black in color...there's a dimple kinda in the middle of it...and NOT on the engine side)? if no then you didn't get a 97 tranny.

Like minty said, check to see that both shift bushings are in place, there is one at both ends of the tranny shift cable. They are NYLON.
