how many quarts for manual transmissions
Im going to have to flush out my transmission (again) and I was wondering how many quarts it holds. I took it to work (valvoline) to drain it and fill it but I found out that they have some stupid thing that says you cant work on your own car at the shop even if you are paying for it and are an employee. I was like WTF. I would have done it myself at home but it was going to be a lot easier to do it there. I let them go on and do it but I told them that it can ONLY take GL-4. well I found out the other day that they put GL-5 in it .
this time Im just going to do it at home and Im going to order some of the red line transmission fluid. but how many quarts does it take? its got the VLSD (have yet to see one that does not) I want to order a quart or 2 more just to have.
Thanks for your help.
ooh and BTW if you can do it yourself DO IT. dont take it to a shop (even if you work there)

Its actually 4 and change, so I bought 5 and had about ~2/3 a qt leftover. Of course, it all depends on how fully you drain the old fluid. I like to pour some new fluid in right after draining to "push" any old fluid out that can't drain on its own.

ok so I finally ordered 5 quarts of the red line MT-90 GL-4. as soon as I get it I am going to be draning out all of the GL-5 that was put in and putting the new GL-4 in.
what I was wanting to do was have the old GL-5 sent off and tested and see if there is any shavings in it or anything like that. if this turns out to really mess my transmission up they will be buying me a new one! I want to have everything documented. how do I go about getting the old fluid tested? where do I take it?

Maximaboi, try www.blackstone-labs.com, they do all sorts of engine oil analysis, I emailed them about gear oil, I'll post if there's anything to report.
aminus------ I'm sure it won't take long. Tho if you wait less than a month Amsoil is bringing back theirs.
Mr Gone, personally I don't think spending (mabye) the 3$ to flush with a half quart is really pricy for the good it may do. Just my .02
Personally, I'm flushing then dropping 4qt Amsoil Gl-4 minyana!! Goodbye notchy shifts!!!
