within the last few weeks..

now explain to us why you want a high output alternator... I'll then explain to you why there's no reason for one...

www.splmax.com will sell you a 160a hot/190 peak ohio generator for $550+$20 shipping, and they claim it bolts right on..160 hot wasn't big enough for what I wanted to do, so I ended up sticking it on the back burner til I decide for sure if I'm going to fill the max up with ham gear or stuff it all in my truck instead. If I can remember to dig up the e-mail they sent me with the product number I'll post it later on.

Check out the audio forum section. We just had a recent thread on H/O alternators. There's a few links in there.

But I agree with Matt... what you needing it for?

well first of all none of you could **** me off it would take more then a few words of critisim from someone i don't know to **** me off, but anyway the reason i need it is because i have recently added a 1200 watt rms amp to my audio system and ever since i did my alt has been making a high pitched whine noise but only when idle and when i attempt to drive from idle position then it goes away until i become idle again, but if you know an alternative to getting a high output alt by all means let me know.

I've had a 2500W RMS system in my car for about 5 years now and still running the OEM alternator (at 220k miles even!!)

Get yourself a large battery- Interstate 900CA minimum, but an Optima or other high-current battery will be fine as well.
and get a 1 or 2 farad cap. don't touch those huge 40F caps.. those things are just marketing gimmicks that put more load on the system than benefit it..
but a high quality electrolytic cap that's 1 or 2 Farads will be sufficient for you.

Install it all properly with sufficiently large wiring, and you'll be good to go.

sounds like the alternator you have is on its way out, so you can just replace it with a reman unit from the parts store.. get one with a lifetime warranty for a few extra bucks and you'll be set.

Don't the HO alternators just add stress to the engine not to mention the fat stack of cash they take?

looks like i will be needing a new alt cause i got stuck in a shopping centre parking lot today 20 miles from my house becuse my car would not start, but what was wierd was i had full power in my car i could listen to my radio roll down windows but it would not start at all so then i call a friend he gives me a jump and the car starts right up but as soon as i unhook jumper cables and try to start the car on its own i had no luck so now my car is stuck in a parking lot until the morning. I originally thought it could be the starter but i dunno what do you guys think?

So did you turn the car off? Or did it die on its own? I would have the battery checked first. Also, the connections. Then the starter. Then have the alternator checked. You could always check the voltage at the battery with the car off. Next, check the voltage at the battery once the car is running. What kind of voltage readings do you get?

no it did not die i turned it off. I just got my dad to give me a jump and i drove car home fine with lights heat and everything on but when i arrived home and turned the car off and tried to start it again it would not start, so my dad was saying maybe i need to get my battery charged. I dunno and also i noticed my alternator only makes high pitched noise when i turn the heat or ac on or when its raining. So again i need an expert opinion

You'll have to wait for an expert opinion, but here's mine.

Your dad was right. Once a battery is drained enough to need a jump, you should throw it on a trickle charger overnight at least. Driving it home usually isn't enough. Don't overwork your charging system with a drained battery.

I dunno and also i noticed my alternator only makes high pitched noise when i turn the heat or ac on or when its raining.
Check your belt.

check battery cables going to the starter and alternator, and your connections to the battery itself. if they're falling apart or corroded, tbey will cause problems similar to these.

as well, get the battery and alternator tested after you figure this stuff out. most parts stores have a machine they wheel out to your car and will test it for you for free.

do that, and then figure out what you need to replace. no need to just start blindly replacing things and throwing money at a situation that may be as minor as a $5 battery connector.

I'm gonna agree with the connections being bad, or the battery.
HOWEVER, based on your early description of the alternator making noise, that is probably also begining to fail, so be ready to be hit with a double if not a triple shot.

well i just found out today with the help of pepboys in my area that my battery is defective. Also my battery connectors are very corroded but what im suprised at is that i didnot find out that my battery was defective when i got it i mean i just bought the thing about 2 or 3 months ago i figure if you have a defective battery you would know right away. well anyway that was the problem it seems like. the car seems to start up fine now, no problems there. What i want to know is about that connector on the positive battery cable cause i bought new battery connectors and want to replace the old ones but the positive battery cable have some sort of connector on it that my dad thought to be a fusible link but we are not sure. So if some one knows what that connector is, please let me know cause once again i need the the brains of maxima.org that have not failed me, and just to reiterate i have a 1991 GXE version of these extraordinary cars.

Yeah, that's just the connectors to replace the fusible links..

Usually what I do when replacing battery terminals is to buy some from an audio shop- ones that have multiple setscrew type connections on them.

then just use some big honkin' wire cutters and cut the wires one by one, strip them back about 1/2", clean the corrosion off them w/ baking soda and water, let it dry, then coat each one in dielectric grease.
once you have that done, stick the wires into the new connector one by one and clamp them down.

easy enough.

well just for my my own understanding you are saying i can cut those wires coming from that little black box thing attached to the positive battery cable in order to replace the positive battery terminal, right?

Yes. it's just a connector on the terminal so that you can easily replace those small fusible links.

You can just cut the end of the large connector off, strip the ends back, and stick them in the new terminal.
