back tires are very slightly rubbing on strut..

I took off my back tires the otherday and noticed on my strut its obivous that the tire has been rubbing against it because the paint on the strut is gone and black marks are on it, and the way its rubbed off is in direction of wheel travel.
I hear no sounds at all while driving. Is my tire too wide? too thick on the sides? or what? will it eventually rub the rubber off the tire so it won't rub anymore? I was thinking if I put a 2mm spacer on the back wheels so they stick out just barely further so they would clear the strut?
edit:tires are 225/50/17

would I be able to sand off 1 or 2mm of rubber on the side of the tire where it is rubbing at? or would this hurt the durability of the wheel and possibly pose a safety issue?

I'd try the spacer - after checking the bearings. How about the outer side, will it then fit all way up? My peugeot linkage rotted away, found that out on the highway, nice smoke billowing view from my mirrors. Tire was about to explode... Dont touch the tire.

Only if the tires are smoking...

I use std washers in my trailer, reason is same. (I will be stoned for this comment)

What is the offset of your rims. I seen an offset calculator that sais if it's a low offset it pushes your rim in closer to the wheelwell and a higher offset pushes the wheel further outside the wheelwell. But otherwise a spacer would be a much better idea.

offset is 30mm i think or whatever..I know its the right offset for the car, the guy looked up in his book for my car before i bought them...I was looking at it again, and it looks like those thin rubber needles on the sides of the tire were just making it look like it was rubbing on the strut because those small rubber things continually hit the strut keeping that part clean/rubbed on
