Power steering fluid leaking

94 GXE, power steering fluid is leaking at the top rear of passenger strut tower , right at where the power steering hose connects to a big bolt (I would guess a banjo bolt). Looks like it is coming either from the crimped hose on top or from just under the bolt (there looks to be a copper washer under there) is this washer available anywhere? How do I go about changing this washer out? Or is it usually the hose that goes?

In my case I had a leak in the hose itself.........would squirt like a water gun if turned to lock on either side. I would have somebody turn the wheel while you look at it and see exactly where its comin from. Cause if its out of the hose then when you get a new one it should come with new washers. If indeed it is out of the washer, then I would think that a local auto parts store would have a few for you. Good Luck

make sure you fix that leak ASAP. i drove around for almost half a year, buying little bottles of steering fluid every week, not knowing the power steering hose costs $35

Thanks guys, I was looking at the Advance parts website (I have a store down the street) they have two types:Power steering return hose & Power steering pressure hose (it says from pump) I would guess it is the pressure hose?

Also are there any tips to replacing it? Do I have to remove the P\S pump? Anything like that? Thanks!

Yes, that is the pressure hose. You don't have to remove the pump, but to loosen the bolt on the back of the pump you have to do by feel......

Had the same problem, with a leaking power steering hose. You should see the bottom of the hood. The material under the hood has soaked up the fluid that the hose was squirting. Hmm....maybe thats why my hood wont stay up. Too heavy for the hood struts.

me too

Hey, I'm having a really bad power steering leak myself. When I got my oil changed they said it was coming from two places, but I'm thinking it just dropped down to another part of the car and appeared to be leaking from two places. Anyways, is this a really common problem with our cars? In otherwords would it be a safe bet that if i replaced that hose my leak would go away? My dad is a mechanic, but has anyone ever heard of the shoe maker with no shoes?

ur too late! i've had it in my system for a long time. still have it!

actually, i recently found out when i started learning about the car that it requires ATF. still havn't had a chance to flush. the reason im not scared of any damage to the rack n pinion or what ever the reason ATF is required, is because i use to drive around with no PSF when i didnt have a bottle of it, and the system has been overfilled many times. the steering is real heavy now, and makes weird noises when turned. definatly feels and sounds damaged. in the upcoming weeks, i'll get around to gettin the PSF out, and gettin in the right amount of ATF. the system requires about a quart right?

Hey, what if instead of ATF, power steering fluid is used? Will it have a negative effect on the power steering or anything else???

yeah, i heard it can damage your seals because of the way PSF is made up or something like that. our system is designed for ATF, and thats what should go there.
