92 se reliability?

depends on how you drive it and what you consider problems.... and how much you can do yourself.
mine has 221,000 miles on it and I take it to the race track (road course, not drag strip) a couple of times a month. I beat ther !)#$*!(%* out of the car and it never dies.
I've had to do some considerbale maintenance on it, but nothing that I wouldn't expect for the way I treat it.
alternator rebuild, water pump, transmission rebuild, wheel bearings, suspension bushings...
but that's all normal maintenance items on a car that's driven across the country 50 times.

im gonna be driving it around normally, not racing or anyhting. i can do most maintenance myself just nothing big like replacing the clutch. what would you recommend replacing, i already have plugs, fuel fiilter, and oil change planned. Should i do anyhting else preventive or just wait until i have to? thanks

This was the list I got from another member here "DARHAW-MAX" after I noted that I had no previous maintenance records
...you may want to:
• Replace spark plugs
• Inspect plug wires and replace if bad—or just replace them
• Replace all filters to include fuel filter
• Do the Seafoam treatment a couple of times to clean engine
• Check resistance of fuel injectors
• Drain, flush and properly refill coolant
• Flush brake and clutch fluid
• Look into replacing both the clutch master and slave cylinders (total cost of parts is < $50.00)
• Replace PCV Valve
• Replace all vacuum hoses
• Clean throttle body.
• Inspect upper and lower ball joints
• Inspect CV boots along with steering bellow boots
• Inspect all bushings in the front and rear suspension
*Edited for accuracy.

Mine has 281,450 miles on it with no rebuild on the engine yet. It does not burn oil.
maintenence costs over the last 4 yrs i have owned it is about $600. {with me doing all the labor} Over all it has been the most reliable car i have ever owned...and i have had a lot of cars....

I paid $2500 for mine and it had 148k, clacking VTCs, no cruise and a bad clutch pedal bracket. The interior and paint on mine are in very good shape, with some rock chips and small dings. The leather is cracking in a few spots, but nothing really bad.
$1500 for a VE 5-speed with leather and 150k is a good deal, IMO.
As for maintenance, these cars are generally very reliable. It doesn't mean something bad can't happen, because any used car is a gamble. Actually, almost any car with over 100k can have stuff like starters, alternators, water pumps, etc. go out.
Oh, ignore some of the stuff in LuckyNYC's post. It was nice of him, but a 92 SE:
1) doesn't have a timing belt (timing chain)
2) doesn't have a cap and rotor (coil on plug)
3) doesn't have plug wires (coil on plug)
Although, it is a good idea to inspect the coils for cracks.

Timing chain is supposed to last the life of the car. Alot of what you may run into will be determined by how it was taken care of before you. Are there any records that will let you know when belts, hoses etc. were changed? I've got three of these cars- two that are great with very little that goes wrong and one that something is always needing attention.

I tell you what will destroy the car...driving the LIE everyday, like I do. I got my 92 GXE for $1600 from a little old lady, with 122,000 miles on it 3 months ago. The car did not have one ding. I drive 35 miles each way to work every day on the LIE and another 50 miles each way to my fiance on the weekends on the Southern State/Belt Pkwy. The car now has dings all over it (from all the damn construction) and a nice little dent on the back. How that got there no body knows. But the engine is great, I know it's not the same engine as yours, but I am very happy driving a Maxima, and totally trust the Nissan engines, this is my second. I got 225,000 on my old 200sx before the body disintigrated, but that engine would still be running. I think 1500 dollars is a very fair price. Just my 2 cents.

"I tell you what will destroy the car...driving the LIE everyday" i hear you. i know how it gets backed up. At least you werent sitting there when that wall fell in the city luckily ill only use it to commute to school and wont be on LI most the year

I have had two 1992 Maximas, both SE 5-speeds with the VE30DE engine.
The first one I traded in with 160k miles. The slave cylinder was the only thing that went wrong with it. The VTCs never ticked and I babied it. Had I known then, what I know now, I likely would have kept it. At the time, I needed something that got better mpg and I bought a 95 200sx that got 40 mpg.
My current car has 150k miles on it. So far it has needed: water pump, cruise control unit, two bad coil packs, a clutch pedal bracket and two window regulators. Total cost: about $400.
The VTCs started clacking and I tried to have them fixed. In the process, the timing got screwed up. Instead of paying someone a bunch of money to straighten it out, I bought a JDM engine. At the time, the VTCs were the only thing wrong with the engine.

guess yall shouldnt drive your cars so hard.....i have had 2 with over 300000 miles and currently also have a 91 vg with 180,000 and a 93 ve with 115,000...with very minor maintenance with both of them. I would have to top of the line reliability to me...lol

Well, my VG has it's share of problems. Bad motor mount (gotta fix soon), broken exhaust manifold studs (annoying as hell), input shaft bearing in tranny is loud (drive till it explodes then put in another $75 junkyard tranny), mysterious clunk from rear suspension, bla bla bla.
Has 140k miles (210k on the tranny) and the engine might as well be brand new.

yeah my 128k VE is in almost near perfect shape mechanically besides a worn input shaft bearing, and the old clutch I replaced. My VG, however has about 100k and it has needed a LOT of repairs (axles, motor mount, new pad/rotors, rebuilt brake cylinders, new shocks/struts, new steering gear boots, window regulator, 2 tune ups) and it still needs the other 3 mounts replaced, timing belt, new exhaust studs, and transmission sometime in the future. Reliability is all in the car, but I figure once all the broken/worn parts are fixed, I wouldn't trust any other car over my maximas.

the guy put "automatic" even tho it's a manual. maybe he doesn't know what a massive oil leak or something looks like. watch out.
