I bought my Max with 116k miles, I noticed the second day the odometer had not moved (**** me off!) I hit the trip meter which appeared to be stuck and the odometer and trip meter began working again. 49 miles later it stopped. I can reset it again but would like to avoid having to keep track of when the trip and odometer stoping. Is there any fix for this that you guys know of or should I take it to a dealer?
Thanks,
John

thanks!

When your speed sensor was not working did your speedometer still work? I havent had any other problems other then just the odometer going out. Wondering if its related or if its the motor in the odometer going bad.
Thanks again,
John

me 2

it used to happen on my 92GXE (back in the day)

1. Don't let nissan do it if you would like to resell your car for anything more than a snickers bar.

Sumtin i noticed is that it happened whenever i ripped my car..i.e. had it planted through first and second gear..
it would stop .. then i'd rip it again for a few times and it'd hookup again ... it might be the vibration from the high rpm could shake it loose and then back on again ????

still the best thing to do would be to buy a new one from nissan .. and put it on yourself or have some corner mechanic do it ... that way it won't be on your car's history..

BTW, the speedometer is electronic (speed sensor), but the odometer is cable driven. When the odometer works intermittently it's either the gear drive by the tranny, or in the odometer itself. My Stanza did the same thing after an accident (same set up as a Max).

I thought if the speed sensor was messing up the speedometer would be stopping as well. This is not whats happening on mine, no problem was so ever with the speedometer just the odometer stops. I was told on another forum the motor that turns the odometer inside the gauge cluster goes bad. I'm going to try cleaning it with some contact cleaner once I get around to removing it.
Thanks,
John

Odometer Inoperative

My wife's 93 maxima's odometer has quit working too. Dealer wants 230.00 for a new one plus what ever it costs to put it in. Seems excessive to me. Can someone help?

Mine has done this too. Everyone on this forum can fix it for under $100. If the speedometer is working, it's the odometer motor or gears. You can buy a complete dash assembly for $70-$80 dollars at a junk yard. Individually from Nissan, each piece costs over $100. Four of five screws hold the trim around the assembly in place. Then, four screws hold the assembly itself in place, take those out and then everything unplugs. Unsnap the plastic cover and you can figure out how to get inside, the odometer has a couple of screws and can be replaced with another. The mileage can be reset too, but that is illegal! Otherwise, if the Speedometer don't work, it's the mechanism on the transmission which has one screw and unplugs, easy as that, you don't need a mechanic!
