I am a 5th gen owner, and I absolutely love my car. My friend just bought a red 94 auto. What do you guys think of this year? he drives it hard but I told him if he avoids neutral drops he'll be fine. Was this an overall good year? Oh yeah and did it have the 160HP or 190Hp engine? Thanks.
need more details about the car to tell which engine it has.
Best way to tell -- if it has a body colored grill (not chrome) and black mirrors, it's an SE (DOHC)
If it has chrome grill and chrome accents on the window surrounds and it has body colored mirrors, it's a GXE (SOHC).
Also, white face gauges and spoiler are SE options. Sometimes GXEs got a spoiler installed at the dealership.
From 89-94, basically the SOHC engine is the same. 92-94 SEs have the DOHC, but they are quirky, especially the VTCs. The ATs in any of these cars are not that great. I would tell him to keep up on the maintenance, especially fluid changes.

AT = the slow lose unless your name is Aaron92SE. Put a cooler on it, change the fluid, hope for the best.

VG 160 hp @ 5200 rpm; 182 ft-lbs @ 2800 rpm
VE 190 hp @ 5600 rpm; 190 ft-lbs @ 4000 rpm

That's actually a false statement. Cause I have an SE, but with the VG with 160.Originally Posted by vansskaterfreek

but he didn't include years
some newbie could read this, only get the fact that SE had the 190 HP engine, and go out and get a 89-91 SE thinking he's getting the DOHC engine

uhhh oh well. If he gets his panties in a twist over me saying his statement is false...
Then he honestly doesn't have a life.
As for me, I need to go talk to a few people about the Maxima meet next month. So I'll see everyone later.

LOL, cool cool, i think this is the easiest thing that gets messed up on this forum. everyone is like im pushing 200hp with my stock vg cuz its an se hippity hoop la. where is this meet at ben, i wanna race you lol.jk
well ill get a few more details soon...but thanks for the repliesm im surpirsed how many of you replied. Its sad though how they say ur 3rd gen is the cloest thing to a sports car the maxima ever was. 5th gen rear suspension is s**t compared to 3rd gen. my mom used to have a 1990 SE 5spd and boy was that a nice car....
Is it just me or is it pretty easy for nissan to have the IRS on and maxima, come on its 3 1 foot links and a shock, doesnt a rear solid axle need more underbody clearance, and thus more work to make everthing fit? Just seems easier to go with a IRS similar to the 3ed gen then what the 4th and 5th have....

Y2KmaxSE "... 5th gen rear suspension is s**t compared to 3rd gen..."
---> Actually I've got two questions:
1. is the 5gen handling supposed to be like Ford Custom 500??? I drove one the other day, I suppos its still swinging there uppandown... Mileage is 35k!
2. How easy it is to trim its odo? (I suspect the mileage)
Yippee!! 3gen! (only with swiss turbo

Btw. Powerful VGE looks like this:

I guess I'm lucky,my 94 GXE has 230K miles,I have never changed the trans fluid, and Pull my 2 streetbikes on a 1400 mile round trip about 4 times per year.Had the car since new.

now if oyu ever wanted to change your tranny fluid, you would have a big problem. just to let you know. well without changing everythign or basically re-building everything.

solid axle = -|___|- plenty of room for trunk
IRS = _/===\_ lots less trunk room
(- indicates wheel hub)

studying to be one, plus my girlfriend's parents own a tranny shop. so i kinda am learning. i asked her about changing tranny fluid that never has been changed before, customers insist, then within 6 months they are back again, wonder why. "we told you"

I have a 1993 GXE AT with over 260K miles on it. It runs like a champion. No mods. I got it from a friend of mine that couldn't afford to pay me back for some money I loaned him. I've had it for two years. I put about 3K miles per month on it. It has a slight oil leak around the oil pan. (any suggestions?)

probably the main crank oil seak ($4), not the oil pan. requires removing the main pulley with an impact gun.Originally Posted by MrJDL
