hot when idleing

i apologize if this has been asked here before, i searched but i might not be using the correct keywords.

my max starts to get very hot when idleing for >5 minutes, like if i'm waiting in line at a drive-thru for instance. It usually happens at night for some reason, when it's cooler. Once i get moving again, it cools back down to normal temperature pretty quickly.

Any ideas?

is this heat what registered on the heat guage or do you mean that you feel it coming from the bottom of the car when you have the window down?

could be a number of different things. Probably needs a new thermostat or water pump, but it's hard to say.

Do your fans kick in when it gets hot? If not, maybe there is something wrong with your coolant temp sensor or wiring to it or the fans or wiring to the fans.

You could also have a clog somewhere. My brother had a Supra that got a radiator leak. He made the mistake of using "stop leak" in it. Well, the leak stopped, but it clogged up the bottom of the radiator and it ran very hot until he replaced the radiator. You might have rust doing the same type of thing.

your fans won't turn on until it gets hot. There is a fuse, but they also receive a signal from the coolant temp sensor -- when it gets to a certain temp, the sensor tells the fans to kick on.

they don't stay on all the time

It was first ones to use an inline 6 cyl (2nd gen?). I believe it was an 85, with 160 hp and a 5-speed. Not great, but back in the early 90s when most kids were driving Escorts and Rabbits, it was very sporty and quick.

MK2, aka generation 2 with the 2.8L Inline 6 that sported 145 hp in 1982 at the start of the generation, up to 161 hp. from 1984 to 1986. Exceptionally durable drivetrains like the VGs, and sounds so sweet when you take it up to high revs. I love those rides. Oh, and their first gen was also inline, 2.6L.

A good way to test your fans is turn on the A/C. When the A/C is on, one of the two fans should be running to pull air through the condenser for the A/C. If you have the A/C on and no fans are going, start checking fuses. If the fuses all look ok, start checking (with the car off and fan unplugged) if the fans are frozen up.

Good luck!
