ok guys...I know that this is probably wishful thinking and maybe cannot be done at all....but I have always wondered is it possible to transplant a 300ZX TT into our 3rd Gens? Assuming that the wiring harness and ECU and such would have to be replace also. Is it possible? Or if the Turbo option is a bit much, could the standard 300ZX engine be a go?

You've got one little problem.

Z = Rear wheel drive
Max = Front wheel drive.

yeah...but I may be imagining this, but I thought I read somewhere that the max transmision's bolt pattern would mate to the Z engine

Before you consider the "can it be done", why would you want to do it?
Unless you can aquire the drivetrain for a dirt cheap price, I can't see it being less expensive than going to a speed shop and having a forced induction system fabricated for your current car.

the biggest problem is the size...
Take a look at a TTX engine.. those things are about 16 feet wide with DOHC heads, turbos, etc. installed (which all are necessary to make that puppy run).

Imagine trying to cram that thing sideways into your Maxima. (mount the engine in the same orientation as what your engine is, so the tranny will line up).. the physical size makes it practically impossible- BUT with enough time, money, and mechanics, anything is possible!

A more feasible option would be the VG30DE-T (single turbo) out of the last generation Zs.. there are a couple people currently trying to work this one out. Another option- which would be even easier- is to put a turbo kit on your stock engine. I would suggest using a VG engine for it, as the VE has more "stuff" at the top and there's less room for the turbo and plumbing to be installed.

I've seen pics of one turbo'd VG engine, and it looks very nice.. I'd like to see performance numbers on it though..

Ok lets correct some little myths and mistakes..

"Z = Rear wheel drive
Max = Front wheel drive."

Many people believe the engine won't work in these cars because they are designed different or something. I don't know what it is. Anyways Z31(84-early 89) 300zx people have used Maxima engines to replace their older failing VG30E(T's) for a long time.

"but I thought I read somewhere that the max transmision's bolt pattern would mate to the Z engine"

It may, it may not. I know its still in the VG series of engines so it does have a very good chance that it will fit. We do know Z31 engines fit though..

"Unless you can aquire the drivetrain for a dirt cheap price, I can't see it being less expensive than going to a speed shop and having a forced induction system fabricated for your current car."

Ahhh.. someone who finally understands. *stands up and cheers*

"Take a look at a TTZ engine.. those things are about 16 feet wide with DOHC heads, turbos, etc. installed (which all are necessary to make that puppy run)."

The DOHC heads in the VG30DE series of engines are very, very wide. The last time I looked they were larger than the VE series of heads which are pretty small. Not to mention the massive intake manifold that covers the whole engine. You're also forgetting intercoolers, motor mounts, etc Matt

"A more feasible option would be the VG30DE-T (single turbo) out of the last generation Zs."

*cough* You mean the VG30E(single cam)-T out of the Z31(84-early 89) right Matt?

"Another option- which would be even easier- is to put a turbo kit on your stock engine. I would suggest using a VG engine for it"

I would too. You already low compression would be very helpful in turboing a Maxima. Just make sure you have all the parts, a service manual, lots of beer, and some friends to help you. This could get tricky in some parts(running vacuum lines, installing the turbo where it fits, etc).

"the VE has more "stuff" at the top and there's less room for the turbo and plumbing to be installed."

It will be done(with helluva mods too). Theres tons of room in the VE engine bay(move the battery, move a little fuse box and bam, theres your turbo mounting space.

"I've seen pics of one turbo'd VG engine"

What? This one? I've got others but I can't share them(top secret ****, yO!) =) This one put down about 250 to wheels wheels at about 7 psi. There's serious potential in 3rd gens. Especially VE's with the stock LSD(better than nothing).

Oh so in other words.

Don't even try it. Its a big waste of money and it would probably be better just to remove your hood, jack the engine out, take the TTZ engine and just drop it in from about 10 feet in the air. Cuz thats pretty much the only way it'll fit..

good suggestion about the forced induction....I have a SOHC in mint condition that I have been trying to put together a Supercharger for....as you know, no one offers a "kit"...so seeing aftermarket wise that supercharging is often much easier to accomplish than turbo and that is more cost effective, how would I go about putting one together? Stillen offers one for 95-current models....any suggestions?
