exhaust help

I just finished having a new wsp y-pipe put on. My cat conv. was bad and pipe and muffler was in bad shape due to years of salt in chicago winters.
I wanted to save $$ and had my sons friend to the work very cheap.(I know, you get what you pay for. He installed the y-pipe, took off the cat conv.and installed a new magnaflow muffler for me. The prob. is the sound is much louder than I expected and it sounds like I get alot of kicked back rumbling. He put in 2.25 size pipes. How do I cut down on the sound some. I still have to install my intake I purchased from warpspeed.
The performance has definitly increased and the job looks good,no leaks.
Thanks

Noises that comes out of end:
Take piece of 1" - 2" thinwalled steelpipe, drill diff size holes =make it swiss cheese. Insert this holed pipe into exhaust pipe: rip the ends as a star to support and stick. Lenght? 10" or more; keep testin...

Noise from under the hood; Ypipe:
wrap around sound insulator; go shoppin

Noise overall:

Do you not have a catalytic converter now? Your post said nothing about putting one back. That might help. Otherwise get a different muffler or turn the stereo up.

Did he install a resonator? That's probably the problem right there along with the muffler choice.

The biggest resonator isn't gonna bring down the sound of a Magnaflow too much....I'm on my 3rd resonator now, and it is still a little loud for my tastes.

What style of magnaflow is it you have on your car ? I am looking at the street stainless series with the dual tips and that is the one thing I am worried about,it being too loud.

That is the exact muffler I want mizeree,Does it sound bad loud i should say, like stupid sounding loud? I rather enjoy how quiet my car is but I wouldn't mind if it was a little louder i guess. Could I get you to do me a favour however and measure the width of the tips ( from outside to outside) becasue I want to know for sure if it will fit nicely inside the opening on the stillen kit or if I will have to get the round ones..

I am also possibly just thinking of getting the magnaflow singlewall stainless tips in the same shape.. internetautomart can you get those also?

BJ White

PS: sorry for hijacking your thread

Honestly, I'd get tips w/ a double wall instead of rolled like mine. If I could do it again that's what I'd choose. I'll try and remember to take those measurements after work today. It has a great tone, not ricey at all, but it is loud. If you get it, buy the largest resonator you can possibly stuff on your b-pipe.

I am looking for a quiet muffler to go with my warpspeed 2.5" mandrel-bent resonated b-pipe and y-pipe. Right now the Edelbrock RPM series "straight through" is too boomy at low RPMs, although the system sounds nicer and more quiet at higher RPMs, I want it to be quiet at low RPMs too.

I suspect the 3-chambered magnaflow "XL" design would be quieter than the standard magnaflow "straight through" style. Magnaflow XL muffler part number 13256 (18" case length, 2.5" inlet and outlet size, center/offset style) looks like it might be just the ticket. Has anyone tried a Magnaflow XL on their max and how loud was it?

internetautomart: can you get magnaflow part number 13256, and if so can you quote me how much it would be shipped to 98040? Thanks!

I also wanted to add that I just now picked up a NAPA "quiet-flow 3" muffler (made by Walker for NAPA) which had offset in and offset out, and 19" case length. Case height and width was 4.25" x 9.75". It's part number was 22393. It turned out that due to the offset/offset configuration it didn't fit quite right, so I'm going to have to return it, which they said I could do in that event. I could have got part number 21856 which was the offset / center configuation, but it would have been a special order. I did slip the quiet-flow 3 muffler temporarily over the exhaust tubing and ran the motor without moving the car to see how the engine sounded, IE - giving it a few revvs, and anyway it was definitely a lot quieter with that muffler.

Call warpspeed and tell them you're an org member. I got mine $160 shipped. I finally installed my warpspeed intake. I went with the dual tip magnaflow because I heard it on a '89 Z and it sounded good. Mine is a little louder and from what I've researched, if I put a high flow cat back on I will cut down on some of the noise. The intake seemed to have leveled off the sound some. Better air flow going through probably.

Just 2k2? I thought any 5th gen muffler had good flow and quiet results. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 2k2-2k3 mufflers have dual tips, right?

Hey I just got the Magnaflow Turbo XL muffler (part number 13256) from internetautomart. It is lookin' great to say the least! If my eyes aren't deceiving me, I swear this thing is 400 series stainless, and not merely aluminized-coated mile steel like Magnaflow advertised it!

Can't wait to install it... which I will probably do tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it turns out...

I got the magnaflow turbo XL muffler on and it's not as quiet as I'd hoped for. The Edelbrock RPM series actually muffles high-RPM noise better, but both mufflers let through lots of "boominess" right off idle. Which is where the automatic drives around a lot and well, just not a good match with the automatic I don't think. I think to quiet down that low-RPM resonance, maybe there needs to be a more substantially sized mid-muffler / AKA resonator.

That NAPA QuietFlow^3 muffler I tried was much quieter than both Magnaflow XL and Edelbrock RPM.
