Bye Bye 1st gear

So yeah, just like the title says, I blew 1st gear tonight. The tranny started making a slight clacking noise after I overboosted at the track last week, so I tore the whole thing apart. Nothing looked bad, but I replaced one of the mainshaft bearings just to be sure, since it had some marks on it. Got it all back together today, and it still made the noise. I didn't quite floor it in 1st, and wasn't even shifting, but the thing just gave way. I thought it might be the clutch, but I can still move the car in 2nd and reverse. When I put it into 1st though and start slipping the clutch, the car kinda bucks like its trying to grab something and letting go. Ah well, such is life I guess. This will be the 3rd time I'll have pulled the tranny case apart.

Ouch!!
well at least you figured out what it was. buy a new 1st gear and cryo/shotpeen it before you put it in. should cost you an extra $50 or so.

Ok... I'm going to thread jack a little... anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit for the VG 5pd Manual?

I really don't want to see what the stealership wants because I'd like to be able to eat for the next year and a half.

Also.. while I have the tranny out and rebuilding I'm going to replace the mounts... problem is I can't remember who offers to change them over to Polyurethane. And it's not listed in the stickies.

You won't hear from me for awhile. I have to visit the crummy in-laws for the weekend. I might not survive .

Thanks for your help guys.

Right now I'm at home... I'll leave here around 1230, and head to Pierre for the Meet. Then go onto her uncle's house. (like an hour away)

tranny rebuild stuff is gone through step-by-step in the owners manual. find yourself a nissan FSM for a 90 model and it'll walk you through it.
the '94 will probably be close enough since the only major difference is going to be the LSD.

Update: Just got done pulling the transmission apart, and 3 teeth on the input shaft gear (the small one right next to the front bearing thats molded in) are shattered, and the first main gear has a few teeth nicked up. There is also a burn mark on my LSD, but I don't think thats a problem since its not on any part that meshes. Nonetheless, I think I'm going to need a new tranny, I doubt this one is worth the time or money to repair.

kcidmil - www.drivetrain.com - i believe the trans model number is the rs5f50a. i was just looking for one of these a few months ago, but i found a whole new vg5 max with 100k less miles. worked out well. anyway, i think they're around vegas, shipping would be a bummer.

Already have the FSM... plus 2 years experience rebuilding trannies. (the AF operators just screw up trannies left and right)
