Almost everything is ok!

I want to thank everyone here, it's nice to see that you're helping each others! It's my first post but I searched a lot on this forum and I found how to repair my power lock and some other things on my 92 SE. I have to tell you that most of the time I speak french because I'm from Quebec, Canada! And I support this forum!

I will search a bit more tonight to try to fix some other things. My power lock works now but it doesn't work with my remote control. I can here the sound and I see the lights flashing but nothing else happens.

Also, I don't know the sound of a VTC failure but I can sometimes here a "tick tick tick" noise on idle. I did the rewire but in think my VTC are ok because the problem is still there and I checked if the ground was good and it is good. It's not when the engine is cold, it happens more often after a ride. Well maybe I'll go to the dealer to find the problem.

And by the way, I love my Maxima!

Yeah I guess my lifters are noisy. Well, the noise seems to come from near of the valve cover. I think I'll get rid of this problem with some additive in my engine oil. I just hope it's going to work!

Crap, sry bout the above^ This is in response to the VTC noise. I have a 92 SE next to my house that runs, but makes A LOT of noise. Dont know about the lifters making noise. I thought that the VTC's were bad on my, we shorted them out and the noise decreased but was still there. We were following the TSB so helpfully posted under the general maintenance sticky, and we checked for debris in the oil jet passage stated in tsb. and found no debris in the oil passage in the head so we think the VTC's are fine, what we found to be making all of the noise is the timing chain, the tensioners must not be doing there jobs because the chain on the front head was hitting some screws, and this was what was making all the racket for use. might be your problem too.

that leads me to my question, i havent made 15 posts yet and sorry if this ends up jacking. We also checked the oil jet passage for the tensioner up front, and found no debris, when we cranked engine and the oil pressure build up, oil squirted out. we dont know why they went bad, maybe there is some debris in there but we couldnt find any, we could just replace the tensioners, but we dont know if they would go bad again. my friend thinks we should just build manual tensioners and throw them in, so we dont take the risk of spending 90 some bucks on tensioners that just go bad again. any suggesstions,

a manual tensioner won't be able to take into acount the tremal expansion and contraction of the chain, not to mention the slow elongation of the chain over time

I was told that this is what was used in older cars, and the expansion over time can be accounted for by simply manually adjusting the tensioner every what? 50 thousand miles or so. . I am not unopen to the fact that this wont work, just that the guy im working with is very experienced and knowledgeable, not that you arent internetautomar, thanks for the input so far though )

has anyone heard of these tensioners going bad, and why. Is there debris inside of the tensioner or is it more likely that it is not operating correctly because its not getting any oil pressure,

older cars didn't have tensioners.
the chain length was MUCH shorter though.
an OHC motor with it's long chain always has an automatic tensioner, as do most timing belts.
you can do what you want, but don't blame me when I laugh at your savings of $90 that cost you $500

I am referring to 60's, 70's, 80's Alfa Romeo DOHC 8v engines with tensioners that are pressured into place hydraulically, but are manually locked in place when the chain is tight. When the hydraulic part fails, tensioning them by hand (wrench pressing the tensioner out) works fine. So what costs me 500 dollars? This car has been driven for
hundreds of miles with no functioning tensioners. Cam timing is still correct. (Chain hasn't jumped) What is the worst that can happen? The chain breaks all of a sudden because of my manual tensioner? Anyways, itll work. I guess i should have frased a simpler question, becuase i didnt post to get in an arguement about whether my alternative will work or not. DID MY TENSIONERS JUST GO BAD BY THEMSELVES, OR DID THEY MORE LIKELY GO BAD BECAUSE OF LACK OF OIL /OR CLEAN OIL.

Well since you seem pretty sure this wont work and would "laugh" if this caused lots of problems. What happens when i put new tensioners in, and they go bad costing me $590 because you would not freaking give me uselful info.

the $500 is when the tensioner fails, and tear apart the inside of the cover.

any part can and will fail with time and usage the only way to determine the actual cause of failure is to take it apart and see.

You can check the tensioner to see how far the tensioner block has worn.
If it's worn down too much, it might allow the chain to slack.

I'll re-check the tensioner block as soon as I get a chance, but I'm fairly certain mine aren't as worn as the one in the picture. I'm thinking the seals are bad and they just cannot hold pressure anymore.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it, i think we will probably just replace them,

Yes it may be the tensioner. I have to check that, someone told me he heard about the same noise coming from a Nissan Xterra or X-trail (I can't remember but it was a Nissan) and the problem was the tensioner.
